"Are you afraid to die?"
Dialogue Prompt - Flash Fiction
"Are you afraid to die?"
She took a while to respond.
“Yes, I am. Are you?”
“Not really.”
“How so?"
“I mean, if it means all this ends… maybe I should pray for it instead.”
Her bed shook. A soft moan. Is she moving?
“…Pray for it?” she asked.
“My family has been praying for a long time now to save me.”
“How nice.”
She sighed.
“I wonder if god would prioritize my prayers over theirs.”
“…are they not the same?”
I didn’t really understand, yet her breathy voice somehow made sense.
I remained silent.
“To save you.”
“But we don’t have the same idea for saving me, do we?”
“Just trust god, right? He will know.”
She was right.
“…Yeah, okay. I’ll trust his decision.”
She giggled softly, silenced abruptly by a cough.
“To put your trust in god. To trust that god will make all end well. To trust your life upon him. Must be nice.”
“It is. It really is.”
“God sounds like such a wonderful person.”
“He is. He really is.”
"..."
A suffocating silence fell upon the room.
“Hey- I’ll pray for both of us to be saved. We will make it through this, okay?”
Her breaths came softer, perhaps a sign of relief. I could not see her, but I could sense that gentle smile of hers.
“...Thank you.”
“We will beat this, trust me.”
I could hear a faint giggle from her bed.
“You sounded just like him.”
“Him..?”
“Thank you for everything. God.”
Her bed shook again.
“God? I could never. Never be him.”
She stayed silent.
“Does he really save those that deserve to be saved? Are we really safe from all this?”
She stayed silent.
“If I really were him, you would be the first person I’d save. You know that, right?”
She stayed silent.
"I'm glad I've met you. You make me feel like someone worth saving. You really do."
She stayed silent.
“Thank you for everything... You.”
She stayed silent.
He stayed silent.
