The doctors are whispering amongst themselves again. I sit on the table, holding my head as the throbbing intensifies again.

I've experienced pain before; my whole life has been about pain. According to the records, my mom died during childbirth, thanks to a now suppressed power of mine. My dad, fueled by grief and fear, gave me up to a group that could "handle me better." Every test, training session, the lost memories, and new power manifestations - the worst being my angel wings - bought along its own agony. But I took it all, because it was my burden to bear for the death of my mother.

This pain though is unfathomable.

Dr. Winslow, along with Director Yates, walks in, holding an already prepped needle. "This'll help you, Arella."

The needle triggers something, flooding my mind with numerous images, none I recognize. A screaming baby. A familiar looking man covered in blood. I have his eyes. And they look so gentle.

"Make sure you suppress her telepathy. She's a baby now, but we can't ever have her finding out the truth."

"She'll be the perfect angel of vengeance."

There's more, too much for me to presently decipher, but the bits I can grasp, these people killed my dad and kidnapped me.

And all those black holes in my memory? They turned me into nothing more than a loaded gun, and they pointed me to whatever targets they wished to eliminate.

The next moments are a blur, scientists and soldiers being thrown through walls, until there's only one left - the director who sealed my fate 23 years ago.

His eyes widen as I easily lift him up by the grip I have around his neck.

"You should be proud Director. I do make a perfect angel of vengeance."

Oh, this is fabulous. Well done.

  • A note for the readers: it's not clear by the end of this story if Arella is a hero and villain, and that's intentional. Becoming a superpower assassin wasn't her choice, but now that's she knows the truth, her future's up to her. I hope to write up a longer piece at a later time, but since there was a limited word count for the challenge, I had to leave out some things.
