ALONE IN THE WORLD

What will happen if I find myself alone

By Sharon ChebetPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Waking up to find yourself entirely alone in the world would be a surreal and terrifying experience. The once bustling sounds of life—the hum of traffic, the chatter of people, the rustling of leaves in the wind—would be replaced by an eerie, oppressive silence. The streets would be empty, shops and homes abandoned, with no sign of another living soul.

Your first reaction might be disbelief, a desperate hope that it’s just a nightmare. You might pinch yourself, splash cold water on your face, or shout out into the void, hoping someone, anyone, would answer. But as minutes turn into hours and the reality of your solitude begins to sink in, a profound sense of dread could take hold. The sheer magnitude of being the last person on Earth would be overwhelming, almost impossible to comprehend.

Practical concerns would quickly surface. You’d have to figure out how to survive. The absence of other people would mean there’s no one to maintain the infrastructure that society relies on—no electricity, no running water, no functioning systems of communication. You’d have to become self-reliant in ways you’ve never imagined, scavenging for food, finding clean water, and securing shelter.

The absence of human contact would be one of the most difficult challenges. Humans are social creatures, and the isolation could lead to a profound loneliness, the kind that gnaws at the edges of your sanity. You might find yourself talking to inanimate objects, creating imaginary friends, or desperately trying to revive a connection to the world that once was. The loneliness could become a constant, oppressive presence, weighing down your every thought.

You’d also have to grapple with the unknown. Why are you the only one left? Is this a temporary situation, or are you truly the last person on Earth? The lack of answers would be maddening. You might search for clues, combing through books, old newspapers, or abandoned technology, hoping to find some explanation. But the truth might remain elusive, a mystery that haunts you for the rest of your days.

In time, you might begin to adapt. Humans are remarkably resilient, and even in the face of such overwhelming odds, you might find ways to survive, and perhaps even thrive. You could explore the world like never before, traveling to places you’ve only ever dreamed of visiting. With no societal constraints, you could live entirely by your own rules, free to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

However, this newfound freedom might come with a heavy cost. The absence of others to share your experiences with could render even the most exciting adventures hollow and empty. The joy of discovering a beautiful sunset, a rare animal, or a hidden treasure would be diminished without anyone to share it with. The things that once brought you happiness might now only serve to remind you of what you’ve lost.

Over time, your thoughts might turn to the meaning of life itself. Without others to interact with, to love, or to be loved by, you might question your purpose. The things that once motivated you—career, relationships, personal goals—might seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things. You might find yourself searching for a new sense of purpose, something to give your life meaning in this strange, empty world.

In the end, you might come to accept your situation, finding peace in the solitude. Or, the weight of loneliness and the absence of any hope for human connection could drive you to despair. You might live out your days in a quiet resignation, or you might embark on a quest to find some remnant of humanity, however faint the hope.

Whatever path you choose, waking up to find yourself alone in the world would be a profound, life-altering experience, one that would test the limits of your resilience, your sanity, and your very humanity.
