"Ain't Working on Me!"

A Drabble about advertising effects

By Lana V LynxPublished 10 months ago 1 min read
Extra "Sarah & Juan" ad

In a media literacy class, a discussion of advertising evolution from straightforward "buy this product!" messages of 1900s to elaborate storytelling and imagery of the 21st century was illustrated by a 2015 Extra gum commercial centered on a love story of high school sweethearts.

The teacher pointed out that the commercial won multiple advertising awards, asking the students to watch it closely and to answer the questions about its effects later.

While showing the ad, the teacher noticed that all students were emotionally pulled into the story.

Except for one, who shouted at the end, "It's a f*cking gum ad!"

Not going to lie, the ad got to me… great Drabble, Lana!

  • And that's how advertising works---the one who yelled being the exception to the rule of the sublime!

  • Hahahahahahahahahaha I can see myself yelling that! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ha! I’m an old romantic so I’d have been suckered into the advert for sure - but I’d have laughed at the student calling it out too!! Great stuff Lana!

  • Nice work. I really enjoyed this story. Keep up the good work.
