Afraid

Scene 1

(Dark room with small voices whispering. Light suddenly comes on and there lies a girl on the ground.)

Faye

I am afraid.

(A man walks onto stage and lays next to the Girl.)

Man

Afraid of what?

Faye

Him and you… (quickly gets up and looks around frantically) All of you.

(A boy walks up behind her)

Boy

Even me sissy? (sniffles) Are you gonna hate me like daddy and mommy hate me?

Faye

(Turns to him and looks away) Everyone. Does everything wrong and will only hurt me in the end.

Man

(Comes off the ground and walks over and puts a hand on her shoulder and grins) Let’s go have some fun. What do you say little lady?

(Boy grabs the girl’s leg and sits there holding on, while the man tries to pull her away from everyone. She is fighting to get away from both when she just gives up and stops moving completely)

Faye

I am afraid, not of what but who and the who is you. (points finger at herself) Me I am afraid of me.

(Lights dim out slowly and the scene ends)

Scene 2

(Lights up on the girl on the floor with her back against the wall. Her head bowed as she cries. There is no one in the room but the room is dark but a bright white light on her. She looks up.)

Faye

(Softly) Mom? No… (looks around) It's you isn't it Hunter?

(She sits quietly and waits but there is nothing and she puts her head back down, lights fade out. In her room she is laying on her bed. When there is a slam of a door closing in the other room. Girl tenses and soon the man comes in. He breathes heavily and looks at her with anger.)

Father

(Yelling) You little… Why the hell are you just laying there? You have things to do! Work? I need the money Faye, now.

Faye

(Stands up and is shaking from limb to limb) I'm sorry… Please forgive me. I-I just… never mind ( She walks off and exits.)

(Man watches as she does away and he stands there frozen in place. He never once lets go of his posture. Lights go down.)

(Lights up on Faye in the lunchroom of school eating by herself. Picking at food dazing off into nowhere. A boy her age walks slowly past her glancing at her. Freezes for a second and looks at her question in his eyes. Walk towards her.)

Rowan

(Hesitantly) Can I sit here…?

Faye

(Shocked) N-N-N…. (Breathes) No.

(He looks at her, she slowly turns back to her food and Rowan starts to walk away, stops again and abruptly sits down next to her. And looks Faye straight in the eyes.)

Rowan

Well I'm gonna sit here anyway, my name is Rowan. You are Faye right?

Faye

(Irritated) Why did you ask me if you could sit here if you didn't even listen to what I said.

Rowan

(Laughs lightly) I've been known for not listening to what I was told to do.

Faye

(Even more frustrated) I know… (coldly) Why are you sitting with me? Why don't you go hang out with those cheerleaders calling your name. I don't want any trouble from them.

(They both look over into the distance. Rowan sighs)

Rowan

They are so annoying. And you looked out of it. I thought you could use someone to talk to.

Faye

(Firm, standing up with her food, throwing it away. Stop and look at him.) I'd rather talk to anyone but you. Leave me alone.

(Faye runs out of the cafeteria. Rowan watches her go.)

Rowan

Well this is going to be interesting.

(Lights go down.)

Scene 3

(Lights on Faye she is standing all alone. She is pacing back and forth.)

Faye

I can't do this… I can't do this… (Freezes) Why am I doing this… I could just end it all right now… Why haven't I yet..? I'm done. This is it.

(Lights shut off. There are whispers, all you hear are words. Insulting words that she thinks in her head. Lights flash again on and she is next to the wall and hands cover her ears she is shaking. Lights down.)

Faye

(Cries out) Stop! Shut up! I don't want to do this anymore! Okay! Just shut up…. (Fades out.)

(Voices fade out too and it stands silent and dark for a couple minutes.)

Rowan

(Knocking on the door no one can see it but they hear it) Faye… Let me in.

Faye

No! You are all lies. You don't know anything.

(Footsteps walk away from the center. Another knock on the door is harsh and loud.)

Women

Let me in, you little bitch.

( A light comes on shining down on Faye back against a wall head down.)

Faye

(Shaking) I can't do this, I-I have nothing left

(The women opens the door harshly and comes towards Faye this woman is a figure in her mind)

Woman

(Yelling) This is all your fault! You killed them all! You filthy bitch! Everyone is gone because of you!

Faye

(Covers ears looking up trembling) Stop! Please I didn't do anything!

(The woman freezes in place and Faye gets to her feet walking forward. Eyes open. Two people walk slowly behind her; they both put their arms on her shoulders. She looks at both of them)

Faye

No please, I'm not ready. I can't… (Pauses and looks around and up at the ceiling. And whispers.) One more chance please. Give me one more chance.

(A man who was holding her shoulder looks at her)

Rowan

You can't do this Faye. Wake up.

(Faye closes her eyes everything goes black)

Faye

It is just a dream
