"Adam the Pure" and Adam's Ale

Of moderation in drink.

The Drunkard's Progress (1846, by Nathaniel Currier).

Adam was born as pure as driven snow. Within the garden there were fruits and such and only water to be drunk (drank, drink-ed, well, whichever). There was Adam's ale a'plenty and in abundance. His skin was lovely and he walked in perfect nakedness and sobriety within the blessed peaceful Eden of perfection.

One day his creator saw his loneliness and brought forth Eve from his ribs. Together they passed their days in innocent unclad bliss drinking Adam's ale.

Adam's ale, Adam's wine or just Adam

"Adam's ale" means unadulterated water.

Now the ole devil within the apple tree saw his chance to have Adam brew some apple cider, he showed him how to switch from Adam's ale to something much stronger. He introduced the fermenting of cider over time when it would become an alcoholic drink.

Poor Eve was appalled and mortified when Adam drank so much cider that he passed out. She decided to see what the fuss was about and so they both fell prey to the drink.

Out into the world went Adam, now fully clothed, he introduced alcohol to the tired mass.

They called him "Adam the pure", on account of his tale of switching from Adam's ale to the 'devils elixir' of alcohol, forsaking the spring that never yet grew stale——

Adam became a villain, introducing the 9 steps of the drunkard's progress.

1. A glass with a friend

2. A glass to keep the cold out

3. A glass too much

4. Drunk and riotous behavior

5. The summit attained, jolly companions, a confirmed drunkard

6. Poverty and disease

7. Forsaken by friends

8. Desperation and crime

9. Death by whatever means readily available (rephrased)

Such virtue lies in deviation from—Adam's ale!".
