Adam's curious question

"What is autism?"

By Monika ZalewskiPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Once upon a time, in a cozy little house by the sunny meadow, lived a boy named Adam with the curliest red hair anyone had ever seen, and eyes as brown as the sweet chestnuts that fell in the autumn. Beside him was his loyal companion, Odie, a pit bull mix with a heart as big as his bark and a coat that glistened like fresh honey.

Adam loved to ask questions about everything, and Odie was always there to listen with perked ears and a wagging tail. One day, Adam had a very important question for his mom, who had red hair just like him, but her eyes were the color of the fresh spring leaves.

"Mom," Adam began, his voice as curious as a cat, "what is autism?"

His mom smiled, her green eyes twinkling with love, and sat down beside him. "Autism, my dear Adam, is a way some people's brains work. It's like having a unique puzzle in your mind that only you can solve."

"Does it make me different?" Adam asked, tilting his head.

"Yes, it does," his mom replied. "But remember, different is delightful. Your autism makes you special. It gives you a wonderful way of seeing the world, like noticing the patterns in the clouds or the melody in the rain."

Adam thought about it and smiled. "So, it's like having superpowers?"

"Exactly!" his mom exclaimed. "And with these superpowers, you can do amazing things. You might see things others don't or learn in your own special way. And that's perfectly okay."

Adam felt happy. He knew he was loved just the way he was, curly red hair, brown eyes, and all. Odie nuzzled his hand as if to say he agreed wholeheartedly.

Adam’s newfound understanding of his unique perspective on the world filled him with a sense of pride. He began to notice the little things that made his day special – the way the sunlight danced through the leaves, the intricate designs of a spider’s web, and the symphony of sounds that the world offered. Odie, with his keen senses, often pointed out things Adam might have missed, like the rustle of a mouse in the grass or the distant bark of a dog.

One afternoon, while playing in the meadow, Adam spotted a butterfly with wings that shimmered like a kaleidoscope of colors. Odie watched curiously as Adam was mesmerized by its beauty and followed it as it fluttered from flower to flower. Together, they noticed how each wing beat was in perfect harmony with the breeze, and it seemed as if the butterfly was performing a delicate ballet just for them.

As the butterfly took flight, leading Adam and Odie across the meadow, they stumbled upon a hidden grove they had never seen before. The trees were tall and wise, their leaves whispering secrets of the forest. In the center of the grove was a pond, its surface smooth as glass, reflecting the world upside down.

Adam sat by the pond, his mind full of questions, and Odie lay beside him, his head resting on Adam's lap. Adam wondered if the fish in the pond saw the world like he did, in patterns and colors that others might not notice. He thought about the butterfly and how it knew exactly where to go as if it had its own kind of superpower.

Just then, a dragonfly zipped by, its wings a blur of speed. Adam wondered out loud, “Does the dragonfly have superpowers too?”

Odie's ears perked up, and he watched the dragonfly with fascination. Adam ran back home to his mom to ask her about dragonflies. Together they looked up dragonflies on the internet and found out that they can see things move in slow motion. It helps them navigate through the air with precision.

Adam’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “That’s amazing! I wish I could see like they do.”

Mom smiled and replied, “But you have your own superpowers, Adam. You see beauty in the ordinary, and you ask questions that make you learn and grow. That’s your superpower.”

Adam felt a warmth in his heart. He realized that everyone has their own special abilities, and that’s what makes the world so interesting. Odie gave a soft woof, as if in agreement.

From that day on, Adam embraced his superpowers, using them to explore the world around him and to connect with others in his own unique way. Odie, his faithful friend, was always by his side, ready for their next adventure.
