The Villagers whispered of an ancient path, lost to time, that appeared only under the silver glow of the full moon. Many dismissed it as legend, but Elara knew better.
- Elara had grown up listening to her grandmother’s stories of the Moonlit Passage—a forgotten realm that existed parallel to theirs, invisible during the day and concealed beneath the weight of shadows. Unlike the rest of the village, she believed. And tonight, on the eve of the Hunter’s Moon, she was determined to prove its existence.
- She set out into the dense woods, following the river’s edge where the old maps claimed the path once lay. The trees loomed over her like silent sentinels, their twisted branches cradling the night. The farther she walked, the deeper the silence became, as if the forest itself held its breath.
- Then, as the moon reached its zenith, the air shimmered like a heat mirage. A soft silver glow spread across the ground, illuminating a narrow bridge of stone that had not been there moments before. It stretched across the river, leading to a mist-laden expanse. Elara’s heart pounded. This was it—the Moonlit Passage.
- Taking a deep breath, she stepped onto the bridge. As soon as her foot touched the stone, the world around her shifted. The whispering of the trees turned into murmurs of unknown voices, the night breeze carried the scent of blooming nightshade, and the stars above burned brighter, as if watching her every move.
- Beyond the bridge lay a land untouched by time. The ground sparkled like crushed diamonds, reflecting the moonlight with an ethereal glow. Towering spires of silver stone spiraled toward the heavens, entwined with vines that bore luminescent blue flowers. The sky was darker here, a vast cosmic ocean speckled with unfamiliar constellations.
- Elara had crossed into Lunareth, the forgotten realm of moonlight.
- She wandered through the landscape, her senses overwhelmed by its beauty. Pools of liquid light rippled like water, their glow pulsing with an otherworldly rhythm. Statues of celestial beings stood frozen in time, their marble faces turned skyward in eternal worship.
- Then, she saw them—the Lunar Guardians.
- Figures draped in flowing silver robes emerged from the mist, their eyes glowing with the pale light of the moon. Their movements were soundless, their feet never quite touching the ground. They watched Elara with expressions unreadable, neither hostile nor welcoming.
- One of them stepped forward, a woman with hair like woven starlight. Her voice rang in Elara’s mind rather than her ears.
- “You have found the Passage, child of the waking world. Few ever do.”
- Elara hesitated but then asked, “What is this place?”
- “A realm between dreams and reality. A sanctuary of the forgotten. Those who walk the Moonlit Passage must prove their purpose.”
- A chill ran down Elara’s spine. “How do I prove myself?”
- The Guardian extended a hand, and the ground trembled. A pool of moonlight rose before them, swirling with silver mist.
- “Step forward, and the moon will reveal your truth.”
- Elara swallowed her fear and approached the pool. As she gazed into its depths, her reflection blurred. Images flashed before her—visions of her past, moments of doubt and bravery, every step that had led her to this moment. Then, a final vision: her standing at the threshold of this realm, reaching out to a door of light.
- The Guardian nodded. “You seek knowledge. Curiosity guides you. That is enough.”
- Elara barely had time to process the words before the world around her dissolved into mist. The ground faded beneath her feet, and a sensation of weightlessness engulfed her.
- Then, silence.
- She opened her eyes to find herself standing at the edge of the river, the bridge nowhere in sight. The moon hung lower in the sky, its glow dimming as dawn approached. Had it all been a dream? Or had she truly walked the path of moonlight?
- A single glowing flower lay in her palm—one of the blossoms from Lunareth. Proof that the Moonlit Passage was real.
- Elara smiled.
- She would return.
