A Different Kind of Playdate
Microfiction superhero story
Sunbeam crashed through the wall, swinging his fist into Frostbite’s face. Frostbite soared backwards, tumbling to a halt against the pavement.
Both the hero and villain sighed as their phone alarms went off. Begrudgingly, Sunbeam helped the villain stand.
“You able to get Danny to school?”
“Yeah. Is Paul still coming to my house for their play date after school?” Frostbite hated Sunbeam, but couldn’t say the same regarding the hero’s son.
Sunbeam took his mask off. “As long as you stay out of trouble ‘til then.”
“Yes sir,” Frostbite groaned. With that, he watched the hero fly away.

Dear New Staff Member, Herein are instructions that are provided as a courtesy to ensure safety across our green campus. Please follow them carefully. As you are aware from your recent onboarding course, your wellbeing and that of the children in your care is paramount to our institution. Consistency is key. In precarious situations, panic is somewhat inevitable. Naturally, we aim to minimise this as much as humanly possible. You will invariably, from your mandatory attendance of the above-named course, recall that children under undue pressure respond best to routines that are both familiar and rehearsed.
