Nadia sniffled as she lay underneath the covers, her little body curled up and her arms wrapped tightly around her legs. She had been like this for who knew how long, and despite her parents wishing her a good night’s sleep, Nadia knew she wasn’t going to sleep tonight. And things wouldn't get better tomorrow. Because only a few hours ago, she had lost her precious doll, Raggedy Ann. The doll had originally been her grandma’s, then her mom’s before it got handed down to Nadia. She loved Raggedy Ann and Nadia always played with her, even when she was playing with her other toys. Nadia even tried to bring her to school a few times, only to get caught at the door or the bus stop in front of their house.
So it only made sense that Nadia wanted to bring Raggedy Ann to their town’s Christmas parade, much to her parents’ discouragement. And despite the briskness of the night air, Nadia was having a grand time watching all the school bands, funny old cars, pretty floats decorated with mistletoe and candy canes, and of course, Santa Claus drive down the road. But then the parade ended and they had to go through throngs of people to just get to their car.
And one of those people bumped into her so hard that she dropped Raggedy Ann.
Nadia noticed it right away but by the time she alerted her parents and they went back to the spot where Nadia dropped her, Raggedy Ann was nowhere to be found. They looked around, but her parents eventually decided that she was gone and took a distraught Nadia home.
The little girl sniffed underneath her covers as she hugged herself tighter.
Raggedy Ann...where was she?
Nadia needed a miracle.
The little girl gasped with realization as she pulled her covers off her face. It was Christmas time...it was a magical time where anything could happen right? Like finding precious lost dolls?
Nadia quickly threw her covers off her before jumping from her bed and speeding to the window. She quietly opened the window and despite the cold wind bustling in, Nadia did not hesitate as she looked up to the sky. When she found the brightest star, she clasped her hands and bowed her head.
“Dear Christmas star...please, I need help. I dropped Raggedy Ann and even though we looked everywhere, we couldn’t find her. She’s my favorite doll and I don’t want to play without her. Please use your Christmas magic to get her back to me. You are my only hope. Please.”
Nadia stayed in that position until it got too cold and she had to close the window. After a few more minutes of waiting in front of the window, Nadia slowly went back to bed and finally, fell asleep.
That morning, she was woken by a soft bang. When Nadia looked towards the window, she gasped before she leaped out of bed.
Raggedy Ann was waiting on the windowsill, a bit dirtier than usual but safe and whole.
Christmas miracles were real.
