A boy who discovers he’s the last dragon.
The Last Dragon
Ethan had always felt different. As far back as he could remember, there was a fire inside him—not the kind that burned, but something powerful, something ancient. He often had strange dreams of flying over vast mountains, breathing clouds of smoke into the sky, and feeling an overwhelming connection to the world around him. He never understood them. Not until the night everything changed.
It was on his fifteenth birthday when the first sign appeared. Ethan had been walking home through the forest when he tripped over a rock and scraped his hand. The wound stung, but within seconds, before his very eyes, the torn skin stitched itself back together. He gasped and stared at his hand in disbelief.
“Did that just… heal itself?” he whispered.
A rustling sound in the trees made him turn. A figure stepped forward—an old man with piercing golden eyes. His presence sent a chill down Ethan’s spine, yet it also felt oddly familiar.
“Ethan,” the man said, his voice deep and powerful. “It’s time you learned the truth.”
Ethan took a step back. “Who are you? How do you know my name?”
The man smiled, revealing sharp teeth. “Because I’ve been watching over you since the day you were born. You are not just a boy, Ethan. You are the last of the dragons.”
Ethan let out a nervous laugh. “That’s insane.”
The man extended his hand. “Then let me show you.”
Before Ethan could react, the man’s form shimmered and shifted. His skin darkened into gleaming black scales, his fingers elongated into razor-sharp claws, and great wings unfurled behind him. His face stretched, and in moments, he was no longer a man but a mighty dragon standing before Ethan, golden eyes blazing in the darkness.
Ethan stumbled backward. “No way… This isn’t real.”
But deep down, something inside him knew it was.
“You have felt it, haven’t you?” the dragon spoke. “The fire inside you. The dreams of flight. The strength beyond normal men.”
Ethan’s mind raced. His dreams, his rapid healing—was it all leading to this moment? “If… if I’m a dragon, why do I look human?”
“Because you were hidden among them for your protection,” the dragon explained. “Many centuries ago, our kind was hunted to the brink of extinction. The last of the elders used powerful magic to seal our souls into human bodies, hoping that one day, a dragon would awaken again. That dragon… is you.”
Ethan’s hands trembled. “I don’t understand.”
The dragon lowered its head, its golden eyes softer now. “You are the last hope of our kind. But your power must awaken fully before you can embrace what you truly are.”
Ethan took a deep breath. He didn’t know how to be a dragon. He had lived his whole life as a normal boy. But deep within him, something ancient stirred—a memory not his own, a fire waiting to be released.
“How do I awaken?” he asked.
The dragon stepped back. “Feel it. Let the fire inside you rise.”
Ethan closed his eyes. He listened—to his heartbeat, to the wind, to the very breath of the earth beneath him. Then he felt it. A warmth in his chest, small at first, then growing hotter, fiercer. It spread through his veins like liquid gold. His skin tingled, his fingertips burned, his back ached as if something long-buried was trying to break free.
Then, with a roar, the fire burst out.
Scales erupted across his skin, his hands grew into claws, and great wings tore free from his back. His body expanded, muscles strengthened, his breath grew hotter. When he opened his eyes, they were no longer human—they glowed means molten gold.
Ethan was no longer just a boy. He was a dragon.
He let out a powerful roar, shaking the forest around him. For the first time in his life, he felt whole. Complete. The fire inside him was no longer a mystery—it was his destiny.
The old dragon smiled. “Welcome home, young one.”
Ethan looked up at the stars, his wings spread wide. He had spent fifteen years believing he was just a normal boy, but tonight, he knew the truth.
He was the last dragon. And he was ready to rise.
