“Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and all the nooks” — Dr. Seuss.

I love reading books, especially for self-development and growth purposes. So in 2019, a small group of us would meet up in the local library to discuss our current reads and, more importantly, what we planned to put into action from these books. Then the pandemic hit, and the world went into lockdown.

This was when I rediscovered Goodreads, which is a social media site for the bookish. I have been a member since 2017. If I am not writing on this platform, then it’s guaranteed you can find me there! It’s a great site where I can follow the reading progress of my friends. Hold myself accountable by tracking the books I read and want to read, discover new books, rate books, create reading lists, take part in challenges and even engage with my favourite authors — some of whom now follow me.

However, my favourite part of Goodreads is the discussion groups you can join. Within these groups, you can participate in polls, watch book-related videos, get recommendations, and see what other people with similar interests are reading. If you want to discover a full list of the pros and cons of Goodreads, check out

I reformed a digital version of my book club on the site, and we now have 900+ members. I also discovered some other awesome bookish groups too…

10 Awesome Groups for the Bookish

So, if you already have an account or thinking of getting one, here are 10 awesome and engaging groups that I’ve selected just for you…

1. What’s the Name of That Book?

If you are like me and want to read a book, but you can’t remember anything about it, other than a couple of random details? This is the group for you! The discussion board is filled with vague plot twists, crappy character descriptions, and requests for titles.

2. Books for Change Group

A book club with a purpose as it’s also an activist organization! If you’re a reader and someone who wants to bring a change, then this group is for you! They believe books can help bring a constructive change in our society and environment, so if you believe that, join Books for Change!

3. Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge Group

An annual reading challenge to help you stretch your reading limits and explore new voices, worlds, and genres!

4. I Got No Shelf Control Group

A relatively new group with a great name. From Harry Potter to Hunger Games, whatever your fictional fancy is, this group will cater to you.

5. The Non-Fiction Hub: Reading for Self-Development and Growth Group

This popular group is for the bookish who like to read for self-development and learning purposes. The main goal here is for readers to apply key takeaways from what they read to their life.

6. Around the World in 80 Books

Consider this your guide to books of the world and travel. Group members also get to track where they have travelled to in the world via the books they have read. Therefore reading really does take you places. So, where in the world will your next book take you? If you love world literature, translated works, travel writing, or exploring the world through books, you have come to the right place!

7. Retro Chapter Chicks Group

“She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain.” — Jane Austen

The group was created seven years ago for ladies that love to read, especially novels with historical settings. It is a warm environment that is open to book chat no more and no less. Jenn, the founding member, has found that the book discussions have enriched her own reading experiences. As a result, I have also found a few kindred spirits, and I will always cherish their friendships.

8. Star Wars Legends Fan Group Group

Included because it’s Star Wars related, and I am a big fan. It’s an engaging and friendly group celebrating Legends 📚. Legends books are those from before a certain mouse took over Star Wars!

9. SciFi and Fantasy Book Club Group

SFFBC is a welcoming place for readers to share their love of fiction through group reads, buddy reads, challenges, and lively conversation.

10. The F-Word

This group is for “anyone who loves to read and identifies as a feminist.” From Virginia Woolf to the more contemporary reading of Roxane Gay.

“For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.” — Anne Lamott

If you have a love of books like me, there are lots of great groups on Goodreads. If the groups above are not for you, just run a search on the site. There are literally 1000s you can join. All of which could help you discover your next best read! Do check them out.
