Why Is the Train Ride to Ella Considered the World's Most Beautiful Train Trip?

In fact, most people who’ve had the experience claim that it’s the most beautiful train ride in the world. 

The Best Train Ride in Sri Lanka 

Train journeys are among the must-dos for tourists visiting Sri Lanka. The one up to Ella is considered the most scenic. More specifically, the one from Kandy to Ella is the most talked about. It takes about eight hours to complete. If you don’t have that much time, there’s a shorter stretch from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, which is just as scenic, though shorter. 

Kandy to Ella 

The train ride begins in Kandy, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka. The train itself is charming, evoking the sense of an old era when the British ruled the country and trains were the main mode of travel. A few local hotels are located close to the station. For example, Aarunya Nature Resort, often touted as the best resort in Kandy, is about 40 minutes from the station.

Whether it’s morning, afternoon, or evening, it’s going to be hot and busy, and the station will be crowded with locals sitting and standing pretty much everywhere. If you want to ride first class, you need to book your spot in advance, or you can ride third class, just like the locals. It’s going to be a bit of a crush, but it only adds to the excitement. 

The train pulls out of Kandy and slowly climbs into the hill country, surrounding you with the most breathtaking scenery you’ll see anywhere. Misty mountains, tea plantations, villages, and tiny stations flash by, while the cool breeze flowing through makes you feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

Nuwara Eliya to Ella

If you’re time-poor, go for the shorter stretch from Nuwara Eliya to Ella. The train ride starts at Nanu Oya Station, just a few kilometres from Nuwara Eliya. There will be both locals and tourists on board. While the journey is known for its scenic views, it also offers a rare glimpse into everyday life. 

Just like with the Kandy to Ella ride, the carriages are packed to the brim with people, with locals engaging in lively chatter and vendors rushing through, selling snacks. 

Find a spot near the open door for the best experience and to enjoy the refreshing breeze blowing through. Don’t get too close to the edge, however, no matter how exciting it may seem.

Attractions 

Along the way, you’ll come across the most stunning landmarks of Sri Lanka’s upcountry. Highlights include Devon Falls, the Haputale Mountain Range, Ella Gap, and the Demodara Nine Arches Bridge, all set among beautiful tea plantations. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera handy, as there’s a beautiful sight after another.

Things to Keep in Mind 

Here are some things you don’t see in many guides but should know:

Heading up to Ella, sit on the right side for the best views of tea plantations, waterfalls, and valleys. If you sit on the left side, you’ll only get to see the mountains. For this reason, many locals choose to stand on the left side.

Everybody wants the open-door space, so it’s going to be crowded. Locals are friendly and might even help you capture the best photos.

You don’t need to arrive early, as trains are often delayed.

When you buy tickets on the same day, you might not get seats. Those who get into the carriage first get the available seats.

Most snacks sold by vendors are often spicy, so bring your own snacks if you don’t like spicy food.
