What I Have Learned from My Child with Autism
I have a nephew who turned 12 recently and when he was diagnosed with autism, I started researching right away. I tried everything I could to understand what’s going on in his head and how to help him. I now have a 3-year-old son who also was diagnosed with autism June 6, 2018. With my previous experience with my nephew, I thought I knew everything I needed to know to work with a child with autism. The only thing having a nephew with autism helped me with was knowing the diagnosis was probable since my son was showing similar signs that my nephew did (I’ve suspected that my son has autism for over a year now but doctors brushed it off until this year when we had a neurologist officially diagnosis him with autism). I have learned so much from my son and I want to share it.

The Letter
Dearest Princess, By now, you are used to these letters. I must admit that I am not. Even though it is how we must communicate now, I struggle. With every word I write the desire to see your life unfold becomes stronger, and ridden with a passion I have never known. Its as if I can see the years playing out before me, shrouded in a foggy haze. It's like looking at brief glimpses of a clear picture as you turn the dial on a faulty TV set. The picture is static amid clarity; I know what lies ahead for you, but I am unable to see the final act. There are so many things your life is about to hand you. Difficult, beautiful, hard, simplistic, unreasonable, wild, passionate, calm, and wonderful adventures that will amaze you. I can't even begin to tell you how much life is meant to be enjoyed. I have a feeling you will complete the task effortlessly.

Potty Training
Being a first time mother is an amazing experience. My fiancé and I had our daughter fresh out of college and had minimal income coming in with my fiancé only working. Yes, we received tons of diapers from our baby shower, but that only lasted for two months after she was born. We were so happy when our daughter stopped drinking formula, which she seemed to just run through within a few days each week. The next major expense to get rid of was diapers. We started potty training a few months after my daughter's second birthday. By the time she was two and a half old, she was fully potty trained and in underwear. Here are some steps that we used that I hope will help you out.

“1 in 150,000 chance,” is what the doctor told us when describing the rarity of my son's new diagnosis, Zellweger spectrum disorder. All we knew was that this disorder was caused by mutated genes, and has a very poor prognosis. Our world was shattered. Our hope was shattered. And we had a long, broken down road ahead of us.
