Rollan and Kelly were in their room when their mom said, “Time for bed kids.”
“Why?” they said at the same time.
"Because it’s late. So go to bed now, ok?" mom said.
Later that night…
Crash! Footsteps on the stairs, two screams! Silence. In the morning their mom and dad discovered with dismay that Rollan and Kelly were gone! They looked everywhere but no sign of them.
Meanwhile, Rollan, 8, and Mailin, 12, were in a truck headed to Africa to be sold as slaves. “Help! Help!” they said but got no help.
When they got there they said, “Help!” But again, nobody helped them.
Three weeks later…
"Wake up, I have a plan," said Kelly.
"What is it?" said Rollan.
"We go to our work post with everybody else and we start working. Then we hide ‘till lunch, and then we run for it!" said Kelly.
"Ok then," said Rollan, already acting older than he was.
"MOVE IT!" said a guard.
So everyone went to work and began to concentrate, except Kelly and Rollan. They were thinking about escaping. At lunch break, everyone was there except Rollan and Kelly. They were running away. "Quick! Hide!" said Kelly.
So they dived into the bushes as five trucks sped by, all with five guards in them. Twenty minutes later, they got up and started walking away. One hour later they came across five broken trucks still with flames around them and seven dead bodies lying around. "Ahh!" said Kelly.
"Oh no! What happened?" said Rollan.
“I don’t know,” said Kelly.
"Hey, look, an ammo box survived. Wonder what’s inside," said Rollan.
"I don’t know, maybe ammo?" said Kelly sarcastically.
"Let’s find out then," said Rollan as he picked it up. "Feels light." Then he opened it and gasped, "It’s money!"
"How much?" said Kelly.
“Let’s find out then," said Rollan.
A few minutes later...
"I counted $10,000," said Rollan.
"Same here," said Kelly.
“So that means $20,000! Yay!" they both said at the same time.
"Wonder what else is in here?" said Rollan, already looking around. "Look, an empty black notebook and a pen. We can write down our adventure we’ll have together," said Rollan.
"Ok, but lets keep going," said Kelly.
One day later they found a town.
When they got into it Kelly said, "Alright, so all we’re getting is some food and water.”
"Why? We have so much money though," said Rollan.
"Because if we keep it light, we can go home quicker, ok?" said Kelly.
"Fine!" said Rollan.
"Look, we can go in there and get food," said Kelly.
"Ok," said Rollan.
"Hello, what can I do for you two fine kids?" said the store keeper.
"Well just have some beef jerky," said Kelly.
"Alrighty then, I’ll go get that," said a different man.
"Ok," said Rollan.
So they got their food and water and walked on down the road toward the airport. Then a car started following them.
Thirty minutes later, the car was still following them, but they had already gotten out of town. They were still aways from the airport when Kelly looked back and realized who was following them.
"Run, Rollan!" said Kelly.
"Why?" said Rollan as he began to run.
"Because they’re behind us!" said Kelly.
"How did they find us?" said Rollan.
"Just run!" said Kelly.
Bang!
"Ahhhhh!" screemd Kelly.
"Keeeeeelly!" yelled Rollan.
“Keep on going without me!” yelled Kelly.
That was the last thing Kelly would ever say.
Later that day...
"Why, Why, WHY!" said Rollan out loud to himself. "Why her? I wish it was me, not her. I wish she was here. I can’t keep going without her. No! I need to get home. She would have wanted me to and I will no matter what.”
One month later … “she will be missed” said the priest
EPILOGUE
Twenty four years later Rollan became a cop to help stuff like this fictional story not to happen to anyone.
*Note to the judges: When my son heard that I was entering The Little Black Notebook contest, he was so excited; he wanted to write a story, too. He is eleven years old and too young to qualify with the contest's rules, but I didn't have the heart to discourage him from trying. So here's his story, written from a boy who would one day also like to be a police officer and help others.
