The Deaf Frog’s Determination

A Story of Resilience and the Benefits of Disregarding Doubt

By Moses Crown OlurotimiPublished about a year ago 4 min read

There was once a calm woodland, hidden in a valley between two high mountains. With the occasional chirping of birds and the calming sound of leaves rustling, it was a serene atmosphere. However, the calm was disturbed one day by the sound of excitement—a bunch of frogs had congregated at the foot of the tallest peak.

It was the beginning of an exciting rivalry.

Reaching the summit of the mountain was the straightforward but ambitious aim. Many had tried to accomplish the task, but none had succeeded. This time, the frogs were determined to show that it was feasible. At the beginning, there were twenty-five frogs lined up, their legs shaking with excitement and dread, but their hearts full with hope. A little, quiet young frog was one of them. He didn’t seem unique, so no one paid him much attention. Neither the fastest nor the strongest was him. The majority of frogs actually believed he wouldn't survive the first hill. However, nobody was aware that this frog was deaf. He was deaf, and because of this, he wasn’t aware of the doubts others had for him.

There was an exuberance when the race started. Frogs leaped quickly, their legs kicking the earth, sending them skyward with excitement. The frogs were first one in spirit, exclaiming to one another about the excitement of the ascent and the scene they could see from the summit.

However, the air got thinner and the ascent steeper. Soon, the frogs began to feel the burn in their muscles and the sting of exhaustion. Every breath began to hurt their lungs. They became aware of how far ahead they still were as they peered up at the towering mountain summit.

One frog croaked loudly, "Why did we even attempt this?"

Another panted and halted mid-hop, saying, "There's no way to get to the top. It has never been done before.

The disparaging remarks caught on like wildfire. Hesitant frogs that had been moving with confidence started to slow down. "Perhaps they're correct," they murmured. "This mountain is too tall for us." They began to retreat one by one, giving up on the goal of reaching the summit. Their complaints resounded across the woodland, filling the air. However, the small deaf frog was not aware of it. He kept hopping, focused completely on his goal, unconscious of the uncertainties whirling around him. Even though he observed other frogs giving up, rotating around, and shaking their heads, he persisted. He couldn’t hear their reasons, their concerns, or their pessimism. All that was known to him was his self-imposed objective of rising to the top.

The murmurs of defeat grew louder as more frogs withdrew from the competition. The handful who were still standing began to shout at the others to stop as well. "Your time is being wasted! "There is no way a frog can succeed!" they exclaimed.

Even the toughest frogs succumbed to the pressure one by one. They listened to the discouraging comments, Accepting them as true, they came to the conclusion that there was no hope. Before long, the little deaf frog was the only one still ascending.

He was alone, but he was unaware of it. He was unaware that the audience was staring at him in shock and raising their voices to ask, "Why are you still going? Do you not realize that's impossible?

Still, he continued to move. He moved towards the summit, hop by hop and step by step. The small frog eventually appeared at the top of the mountain after what seemed like an age. Gazing upon the valley beneath, his small heart grew swollen with pride. For an instant, everything seemed ideal—the view was stunning, the air was crisp. The other frogs couldn't believe it. They had witnessed something unbelievable—someone had actually made it to the top. Eager to learn how he had done it, they ran up to meet him.

When they got to him, they were all like, "How did you do it?" "What gave you the willpower to carry on when everyone else gave up?"

The small frog just grinned. Though he remained silent, they were perplexed by it.

"Why do you not respond?" They questioned, getting agitated. "Share with us your secret, please."

Finally, one of the frogs recognized the truth. He murmured, "Wait a minute," his eyes wide with comprehension. "He has no hearing! He never heard our depressing remarks.

Everything made obvious after that. The tiny frog had never been burdened with the uncertainties and worries that had prevented the others. The voices that told him it was impossible had not demoralized him because he had not heard them. His only goal was to reach the top, and he persisted in doing so until he did.

The other frogs fell silent, taking this realization to heart. They had allowed other people's remarks to control them, but the deaf frog had imparted to them a valuable lesson: you can do what other people think is impossible if you ignore negativity and concentrate on your objective.

In that moment, they all learnt a crucial lesson: sometimes, you need to be deaf to uncertainty if you want to succeed.
