The Dark Side of Social Media

How It's changing Our Behavior and What We Can Do About It

By Pratham ModiPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The use of social media has permeated every aspect of contemporary culture. It allows us to communicate with people from all over the globe and gives us access to an abundance of resources, both educational and entertaining. While there is no doubt that social media can improve many aspects of our lives, its negative effects on our actions and mental health are becoming increasingly apparent. This essay will discuss how social media is influencing our actions and what we can do to limit the damage it may cause.

The promotion of social comparison may be the most pernicious impact of social media. Images and words from others are constantly flooding people's minds, causing them to compare themselves unfavorably to those they see online. Inadequacy, poor self-esteem, and depression are all possible outcomes. As a result of individuals only sharing the best parts of their lives on social media, an unrealistic and unreachable benchmark for success is set.

Examples include selfies taken in costly restaurants, expensive clothes, and far-flung vacation spots. They may have saved up for months for these events, but social media only displays the best moments. This may cause worry and insecurity in those who feel they are losing out on something.

Furthermore, social media can also be compulsive. People can develop FOMO (fear of missing out) as a result of social media's continuous stream of notifications and updates, leading them to feel like they need to be online 24/7. The result may be less output as well as elevated amounts of stress and anxiety.

Cyber bullying is another growing problem because of social media. People are more likely to be hostile and cruel online than they would be in person. Cyberbullying is a serious problem that can lead to severe mental health issues and, in the worst instances, suicide. In addition, cyberbullying can occur at any time, day or night, making the sufferer feel constantly threatened and helpless.

The mental health impacts of social media are not to be underestimated. Higher rates of depression, anxiety, and stress have been related to increased social media use. This may be due to the fact that despite constant online communication, users of social media often report feeling lonely and isolated. Furthermore, social media can serve as a fertile ground for rumors and false information, both of which can increase people's levels of confusion and anxiousness.

So, what can we do to lessen social media's drawbacks? Reducing our time spent on social media is one option. Limit the amount of time you spend on social media each day, and think about using apps like Apple's Screen Time to monitor your usage. Also, think before posting on social media. Before you hit "post," give some thought to how your words might resonate with others. Maintain a courteous and respectful demeanour in all your online encounters.

Building up one's own confidence is crucial. Boost your confidence and feeling of self-worth by working on yourself. Keep in mind that what you see on social media is likely an exaggeration of the good in people's lives. Don't waste time comparing yourself to others; instead, concentrate on what you've achieved on your own.

Offline meetings are another viable option. Try not to rely solely on online platforms to build relationships; instead, put forth some effort to meet individuals face-to-face. Participate in an activity you enjoy or arrange a get-together with pals. As a result, you may experience less loneliness and isolation.

Finally, if you feel like you need assistance, go get it. Seek professional assistance from a mental health expert if you're having trouble dealing with the adverse effects of social media. With their help, you can reduce the negative effects of excessive social media use on your life.
