The Dancing Duo

How Sarah and Shiji Found Their Way to the Stage

By Pratap VenkatesanPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Sarah had always been a bright and cheerful little girl. Growing up in the coastal town of Varkala in Kerala, India, she loved nothing more than going to school on her bicycle with her best friend Shiji. The two girls were in the same class and shared a love for dancing. Whenever they heard music, their feet would start to tap, and they would move to the rhythm without a care in the world.

Unfortunately, their parents were strict when it came to studying. They believed that their daughters' education was the most important thing and discouraged them from practicing dance at home. So, every day after school, on their way back home, Sarah and Shiji would stop by the river bank and practice dance moves they had seen on TV.

Their fathers were both railway station signalmen, and one day they were on their way home from work when they stumbled upon the girls practicing by the river bank. The girls quickly fled, embarrassed and afraid of being scolded. That was the end of their daily dance practice.

But fate had other plans for the two girls. One day, an inter-school dance competition was announced, and Sarah and Shiji were thrilled at the idea of participating. The competition was the talk of the town, and everyone was excited to see what the students would come up with.

At the same time, a dance group had come to town to perform in the cultural fair. Sarah and Shiji made it a point to attend every night of the week-long event, soaking in the performances and practicing their moves in secret. Though their parents were all against dance, they dared to sneak out carefully each night to attend the dance performances. These dance performances were done by professionals from the nearby city. Though both of them got tiresome by watching the performance each day, their zeal to perform and win the competition became more evident. Their confidence grew each day and so were their smiles and love for dance. They were surprised to see different varieties of dancing styles which both of them mastered in just a glance.

When the day of the competition finally arrived, Sarah and Shiji were nervous but excited. They had practiced hard, and they were determined to give it their best shot. As they danced, they felt alive and free, moving to the rhythm with ease and grace.

The judges were impressed, and to the girls' surprise, they were awarded the special prize for the "most vibrant dance duo." Sarah and Shiji were overjoyed, and they ran home to show their trophy to their parents.

Their parents were stunned. They had never seen their daughters dance like that before. As they watched the girls' faces light up with joy and pride, they realized that they had been too strict in their approach. They decided to give their daughters the freedom to pursue their passion for dance, provided they didn't neglect their studies.

From that day on, Sarah and Shiji practiced dance at home, under the watchful eye of their parents. They continued to do well in school, and as they grew older, their love for dance only grew stronger. They went on to participate in many more competitions and won numerous accolades for their performances.

Years later, as they looked back on their childhood, Sarah and Shiji couldn't help but smile at the memory of their secret dance practices by the river bank. It was a reminder that sometimes, the things we love most are worth fighting for, even if it means going against what others think is best for us.
