Thanksgiving and The Latte Game
Jason's Holiday Challenge

For Emily, the smell of freshly brewed espresso had always been a tempting one. But after her past experiences, she made sure to avoid it. She knew it had a way of making her lose control over her feelings.
This Thanksgiving, her best friend, Rachel, invited her to Mark’s football party. Emily had a lot of history with Mark. They were once high school sweethearts, and although they had broken up a year ago, their past still lingered. Emily and Mark, along with Rachel, had all grown up together in the same neighborhood, and even though their friendship had ended after Mark's betrayal, Rachel still kept in touch with him.
This year, Mark decided to host his annual Thanksgiving football party, and everyone was asked to bring something for the potluck dinner. Emily had always been the one to prepare the food for Mark’s party before their breakup, but now she felt uncertain about attending. Mark had hurt her deeply, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to see him again.
Despite her reservations, Rachel convinced Emily to come along. “It’ll be fun! You don’t have to stay long, just come and enjoy the game,” Rachel said with a smile. So, reluctantly, Emily agreed to attend.
They arrived at the party about an hour late, just as the game had started. The men were gathered in the living room, engrossed in the football match on Mark's huge 75-inch TV, while the women were chatting away in the kitchen.
"Hey, what’s going on in here? The party’s in the living room!" Mark called out, standing in the doorway of the kitchen. “Rachel, can you help me bring the food out to everyone?”
Mark and Rachel were cousins, so they had a very close relationship. Rachel had grown up like a sister to him, and she knew him well. As she gathered the food onto a portable tray to bring into the living room, she could tell that Mark was hoping to talk to Emily. He wanted to speak to her privately, and she wasn’t sure if Emily was ready for that.
Once the food was set up in the living room, Mark took the opportunity to speak with Emily. He had something important to say, but he knew he had to approach her carefully. Mark could always charm Emily, but after everything that had happened, he knew he needed to take it slow.
“Can I get you something to drink?” Mark asked casually. Emily smiled, but there was something nervous in her expression. “I’ve got some fresh espresso,” Mark added, trying to make it sound like a special treat.
Emily hesitated, knowing she usually avoided drinking espresso. But Mark was offering, and the temptation of it being a holiday drink made her take a small sip. It was smooth, rich, and somehow calming. She felt herself relax a little as the espresso worked its magic, loosening her thoughts.
The warmth from the drink seemed to wash away some of her defenses, and as she let the taste linger, she found herself looking at Mark differently. Maybe it was the drink, or maybe it was just the nostalgia of being back in his presence, but she couldn’t deny that a part of her missed him.
“I’ve missed you, Emily,” Mark said softly, looking directly into her eyes. “I know I messed up. I should have never cheated on you. If there’s any chance for us to get back together, I want to try.”
Emily’s heart raced. She could feel the familiar pull toward Mark, the same emotions she had tried so hard to bury. But with the espresso in her system, everything felt different—softer, more manageable. For a moment, she wasn’t angry at him. She wasn’t hurt. It was as if time had rewound to before the betrayal, and the old feelings resurfaced.
Her thoughts were clouded, and she found herself saying, “I don’t know, Mark. It’s complicated. You hurt me, but…”
But those words didn’t seem to hold the weight they once did. Maybe the espresso made it all seem less complicated. Maybe it was just the fact that she had once loved him so much. Emily couldn’t push those feelings away so easily, not when they were both standing there, close enough to touch, with the warmth of the drink lingering in her veins.
Mark could tell Emily was softening. He knew the espresso had worked its magic, but he also knew that he couldn’t expect forgiveness so easily. Still, seeing her again—feeling that connection—gave him hope. He hadn’t realized how much he missed her until this moment, and he promised himself he would do whatever it took to make things right.
For now, though, they simply stood there, the past between them unresolved, but the chance for a fresh start in the air.
The party went on, but for Emily and Mark, this Thanksgiving would forever mark a turning point. Whether or not they would rebuild their relationship was still uncertain. But one thing was clear: sometimes, the smallest gestures—like a cup of espresso—could reopen doors to emotions long thought closed.
