fact or fiction
Is it fact or merely fiction? Fact or Fiction explores the myths and beliefs we hold about our family dynamics, traditions, and if there's such thing as a 'perfect family.'
The Adventures of Mr. Schnoozle
(Continued from "The Adventures of Mr. Schnoozle: Foreword & Prologue") “It wasn’t long ago — only an eon or two — that the world was divided. In a harmonious sort of way. There were only several masses of land in this great oceanic expanse, and a smattering of islands. On one of these lands, called Willowbrook, lived all manner of curious and wonderful creatures. Willowbrook was ruled by magical mares and steeds: the Equinians. They watched over and protected the land, the skies and the bodies of water that touched it’s shores.

Susie Q
The sun was setting as the Quincy girls just finished up their dinner. Their mom turned and said to all of them, “It’s time to clean up; help each other to get all the dishes done.” All auburn haired girls moaned at once. “I will wash!” The oldest sister quickly exclaimed. “Why do YOU get to wash?” The youngest sister Susie pouted to her. She proudly retorted with, ”because I’m the oldest, so I get to choose first.” She went on, “besides, since you two are not jumping in to help, I can also tell you to grab dishes, and Shelly can dry.” Immediately the middle sister, Shelly, rolled her eyes. She thought her older sister was being obnoxious. In reality, Susie and Shelly were horrible at keeping up with any type of chore. Especially if they didn’t like it. They certainly did not like dishes. They would rather be goofing around.

Something Worthwhile: A Tribute
The summer sun is hot as the mother and daughter traipse down the path behind the library. Mother has books and the little girl a blue popsicle. They walk to the hill overlooking the river and sit on the grass. It’s a library outing, one of the little girl’s favourite things to do. She sits in the sun and listens to her mother read. Her melting popsicle stains her fingers, but the little girl is far away—world’s away—in the land of her mother’s stories.

SON, YOU MADE DAADA PROUD!
SON, YOU MADE DAADA PROUD! A couple of weeks back, my darling wife had been pestering me to please come over to my son's school (where she teaches) to come and take the pupils through "Origami" (a Japanese art of folding paper into different objects).

In the Time of Night
The only time I haven’t seen a scary day in the time of night was the last time my mother was home. She wasn’t a very strong woman, emotionally, she was weak. She was weakly uninhibited without a reason not to be. I wonder if being a mother played a role on her becoming herself. If we kids somehow made her into the weaker woman that she was. I decided the last time she disappeared that I would not look for her and yet in every face I pass on the broken cobble streets I see her. I see her in the broken windows and busted frames. I see her in the rain drops as they fall on my face. I see her in the moon at night while I rock myself to sleep. I sing sad songs to her and wonder if she’ll ever come home?

Two Bridges
The name of the town meant ‘two bridges’ in German. My brother spoke little German as far as I could tell. He was also in the Air Force. He was big! Muscular, fit, toned from years spent in a gym and possibly some period of experimenting with anabolic steroids. We were both stationed in Germany during the 1980s; he was in Zweibrucken; I was assigned to Lindsey Air Station, two hours away.

Abigail
It was the utter lack of heat that had been the worst bit, Abigail thinks as she leans against her wall with the glass tumbler pressed against her ear. It had been an awful year, she thinks. Talk about an understatement. Half the world’s population was wiped out almost overnight by Covid-25.

Teens today: The ongoing racism in society
Now let me just tell you this. First, the amount of racism that is still happening in this world is unspeakable. The teen world is crazy; we are surrounded by social media platforms that make it so easy for other people to make hateful comments without being identified. We are also in a confined space at school where some people decide it’s ok to say racist things. Now, this isn’t the case everywhere but it’s so common. Is this issue really being addressed?
