Still living at Home In your 20s

Why it sucks during a pandemic

By Robert McLeanPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

So you just graduate college, you got a job, and you're looking to move out. Turns out that rent is so damn expensive, like $1,100 or even over $2,000 depending on whether or not you want to live in New York City or some kind of suburb in the middle of nowhere. It's the middle of a pandemic in 2020 and people are getting laid off left and right. What do you do? Only fans? Ask parents for money? You've had it up to here with your parents and want to live with your friends just like in the college days. But what? Well, here is why it sucks to still live with your parents.

1: No Privacy:

You ever just want a place to yourself? Or just to you and your friends? Who doesn't? That can be hard when you live with your parents, are unemployed and cant afford to move out. This is what makes me miss college. I enjoyed living in the dorms because it meant freedom and independence, but most importantly ... PRIVACY! Now that I moved back in with my parents it feels like I cant really do anything I want. I feel like a teenager again. It sucks. Especially with this stupid pandemic.

2: You can't throw parties or invite friends over

It would be nice to have your own place where you can invite your friends to chill at your place. Just for a change. It sucks to be in your 20s and still always have to ask your parents if friends can come over! Do I look 14 to you?! I'm tired of having to go over to a friends' place, especially if they still live with their parents too. That right there is a waste of gas. Also the fact that we have to either go to a bar or to a club instead of having parties in our houses with our parents permission is hurting my pockets. Alcohol is expensive! Let alone reservations at bars. What sucks is that it is at limited capacity. So you can't even enjoy yourself! Bummer!

3: Your love life is likely to suffer

Many people in their twenties want to grow apart from their parents and start their own lives. Especially if you are a guy who still lives with his parents and have a girlfriend. She is going to be less attracted to you because of the fact that you still live with your parents. The term "Mama's boy" or "Daddy's girl" is being thrown around for people like that. I understand if you are a family person and you want to help them out with the small things like chores, but if you are lucky enough to have a well paying job during this pandemic, it's time to move out.

4. Don't Judge Yourself Though

I know it still sucks to still live at home with Mom and Dad, but maybe you need their support to be able to launch yourself, find a job and good looking apartment. If you have a good paying job, then that is a good first step to becoming independent. Moving out comes with time. Some of my friends still live with their parents at 23, 24. One of them moved out at 26. If I'm lucky I'll move out come January 2021.Keep your head up, king or queen. It'll all be worth it.
