Sister’s Effort

Sister’s Effort

By Sudais ZakwanPublished about 2 hours ago 3 min read

Amjad was still very young when his father passed away. His younger sister, Rani, depended on him and their mother. Their mother worked tirelessly in other people’s homes, doing household chores to earn enough to feed herself and her children. Despite the hardships, she had one strong wish: that Amjad would grow up to become a respected officer. She paid special attention to his education, often sacrificing her own comfort and rest to ensure he had every opportunity to succeed.

One morning, Amjad felt unusually sad. He knew that today was Rani’s birthday. While their mother was busy washing dishes, little Rani ran up to her and exclaimed, “Mom! Today is my birthday! I want sweets and toys!”

Their mother tried to explain patiently, “Rani, we don’t have enough money for such extravagance. You know how hard I work to provide for us.” But Rani insisted, and when she began to cry, their mother gently slapped her and said with emotion, “I am working in other people’s homes to educate you. Where am I supposed to find extra money for these things?” Overcome with emotion, she hugged Rani tightly and began to weep silently.

Amjad quietly witnessed the scene. His heart ached as he saw his mother and sister struggling, and an idea suddenly formed in his mind. Without a word, he left the house and walked straight to the workers’ settlement. There, he approached a contractor and said, “Sir, if there is any work, please assign it to me.”

The contractor, a kind and compassionate man, hesitated and replied, “Son, you are too young. This work is hard and meant for adults.” But before he could finish, Amjad spoke earnestly, “Sir, please, I am in desperate need of work. I must do something for my family.”

Hearing his sincerity, the contractor agreed. Amjad spent the entire day painting the walls of a room, working diligently and tirelessly. By evening, he had earned two hundred rupees. With the money safely in his hands, he went to the market. He bought sweets and a frock for his little sister, Rani, smiling at the thought of her delight.

Returning home, Amjad called out joyfully, “Rani! Rani! Look what I have for you!” His mother, seeing the items, was initially shocked and scolded him, “Amjad! Where did you get these things from? Did you beg for them?”

Amjad, with his hands still covered in paint, held them out and said proudly, “Mother, I did not beg. I worked for this. I earned it with my own labor.”

Hearing this, their mother’s eyes welled up with tears. She held his painted hands close to her face and whispered, “My son, I am so proud of you. You have shown responsibility, courage, and care far beyond your age. I have hope now that you will grow up to be a great man, someone the world cannot defeat.”

Rani, her eyes wide with delight, hugged her brother tightly, her small hands clutching the frock and sweets. She felt loved and cared for, and the warmth of her brother’s effort left a lasting impression in her heart.

This day became a defining moment in Amjad’s young life. Despite his tender age, he learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and the joy of selflessly helping others. His mother’s sacrifices, combined with his initiative, strengthened their family bond, teaching all three of them a lesson in perseverance, love, and the dignity of labor.

Through Amjad’s actions, Rani understood that love and effort often matter more than wealth. She also realized that her brother was a role model, someone whose determination and honesty would guide her throughout her life. Their mother, though weary from years of struggle, felt an immense sense of pride and relief. Her children had not only survived hardship but had learned to support one another with empathy, courage, and integrity.

In the end, that small birthday, though modest in gifts, became monumental in meaning. It taught Amjad, Rani, and their mother that love, sacrifice, and effort are far more valuable than material possessions. It became a story they would remember forever—a story of a young boy who, through hard work and determination, brought happiness to his sister and pride to his mother, showing that even in poverty, the heart’s labor can achieve greatness.
