Pressure makes Diamonds.
The story of how my moms journey has inspired my own.

My mom has truly shaped me into becoming the woman I am today. Although I am still 22 and have a lot more Adulting to do , my mom has inspired me in so many ways. Regardless I am incredibly grateful to come from such a strong lineage of great women. When I was 2 years old , my dad was deported back to Nigeria , when we were living in canada. My mom had to raise three toddlers all by herself. While taking care of us she was balancing a job and going to school to get her license to become an R.n. At the age of 4 she moved my sisters and I to Nigeria because she wanted our family to be reunited back together but things didn't go as planned.
The relationship between my mom and dad became verbally , emotionally and physically abusive. She decided one night to leave and go back to Canada. She promised us that once she was more financially stable she would come back to Nigeria and to get all three of us. I did not see my mom again till I was 8. I remember how sad I was that night. She woke up my sisters and I in the middle of night and told us this in secret when my Dad was not around. I am inspired by the strength it took my mom to leave a toxic relationship because last year when I was in a toxic relationship I was reminded of my mom and it gave me the courage to do the same. Leave a relationship that was no longer serving me.
After 4 years of not seeing my mom , she came back and picked up my sisters and I from Nigeria. It felt like I was seeing an Angel after not seeing my mom in years. Like how is it real that my mom is right here in front of us. My older sister was sent to London earlier that year to attend boarding school which my mom was not pleased about , but after moving my twin sister and I to New York , she later on went to London to pick up my older sister.
My mom is literally the strongest person I know. She has persevered through so much. At 16 both of her parents were already dead. She moved to Germany before the age of 18 without knowing anyone. At the age of 17 my twin sister and I moved back to Canada to attend University without knowing many people here. We knew that if our mom could do it , then so could and irs true. We have been doing best job we can take care of ourselves while living here.
One of the best advice my mom has ever given me is “be kind to everyone because you never know who might help you in the future.” This advice holds true till this day. I remember last summer Due to COVID , it has been difficult for me to find employment. I had a friend named Tijuana who brought me around her other friends. This friend of hers named Carla really liked my character as a person and hired me to be a singing teacher/tutor to her daughter because she wanted her daughter to have a good role model around. Although I no longer teach/tutor her daughter anymore due to the fact that she has moved , I was able to land this opportunity all thanks to my mom's advice on being kind to everyone.
My mom's spirituality and faith in a higher power has really rubbed off on me. During tough times , leaning on a higher power (God/Universe) has helped me get through a lot challenging moments in my life , like when my twin sister and I almost faced eviction or when I didn’t have enough money for groceries. Praying for help and support has always been key to helping me get through any circumstance. Due to this I have never lacked a day in my life. Everything seems to fall right into place at perfect timing . Somehow I receive blessings , love and support from strangers and sometimes other family members due to the trust I have in Source.
My mom is literally the most Amazing person I know. She has been through so much , from situations that she thought she could never overcome , she has managed to persevere through all obstacles . Knowing that her blood runs in my system gives me hope that I can rise through any circumstance or cards I am faced with. I am grateful for all of the strong beautiful , independent women that have entered my life and for all the women in history that have paved the way for me to be able to live the way I get to live today. It is truly a blessing and although we still have a long way to go with how women are treated in society and all over the world , I know that we have the power to usher in more strong resilient women to this world that can create powerful long lasting change.

What an amazing piece Kehinde. Though i don’t know your amazing mom but i know of her because i worked for your dad for years in Lagos and i remember you and your sisters very well then. Your dad through an evening conversation he reshaped my journey positively and i am grateful for that. Pls keep your mom’s advice and continue to treat people well and great things will come through for you. You have no idea how happy i am to read this. I am so happy for you.
