My Pregnancy Journey: From Anomaly Scan Anxiety to Finding Peace
Navigating Anxiety and Finding Peace During Pregnancy

My Pregnancy Journey: From Anomaly Scan Anxiety to Finding Peace
At 18 weeks pregnant, I went for my anomaly scan—one of the most important ultrasounds during pregnancy because it can reveal potential developmental issues. The clinic I visited offered three types of anomaly scans: basic, advanced, and high advanced. After some thought, I chose the advanced scan, knowing it would give me more accurate and detailed results.
The challenge was that my baby was lying face down and refused to turn. Because of this, the doctor couldn’t properly view the chambers of the heart. Over the course of two days, I had to undergo six ultrasound attempts. Each time I left the room, I carried a heavy load of stress and uncertainty. I tried walking, eating sweets, and even drinking coffee to encourage movement, but nothing worked. Finally, before the sixth attempt, I had a mocha with cream and went for a walk. When I returned, the doctor smiled and said the baby had turned—allowing them to complete the scan.
The results showed that my baby was healthy overall, but two points stood out:
- Echogenic focus (a white spot in the heart)
- The cerebellum measuring at the lower end of the normal range
Hearing this worried me deeply. The doctor explained that an echogenic focus is a common finding during pregnancy and usually disappears in later weeks. Even if it remains, it doesn’t affect the baby’s heart function. As for the cerebellum, it was still within the normal range, but I was advised to repeat the scan at 25 weeks to ensure proper growth and check whether the spot had resolved.
I then consulted my own OB-GYN, who confirmed the same: these findings are considered “soft markers” and usually resolve without any consequences. Her reassurance brought me comfort, though as a mother, I couldn’t help but worry.
Now at 22 weeks, I am in a better place emotionally, though I still feel a little anxious about the follow-up scan. To keep calm, I drink plenty of water, go for walks, cook my favorite healthy meals, and listen to music. Talking to my baby and feeling the little kicks bring me joy and remind me that I’m not alone on this journey.
I’ve also been reading medical articles and expert opinions about echogenic focus. The more I read, the more I realize that in the majority of cases, it poses no risk at all. Still, I look forward to the 25-week scan, hoping for clear confirmation that everything is perfectly fine.
In addition, I have a 24-week checkup scheduled to monitor my blood sugar, blood pressure, and essential vitamins and minerals. These regular checkups reassure me that I’m doing everything possible for a healthy pregnancy.
My Advice for Other Expecting Mothers
Pregnancy is a unique journey, and no two experiences are exactly the same. If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are some lessons I’ve learned:
- Choose a reliable clinic: Make sure your ultrasounds and tests are performed in trusted medical centers.
- Find a skilled doctor: Having an experienced OB-GYN makes all the difference in reducing unnecessary worry.
- Manage your stress: Practice deep breathing, take warm showers, listen to music, or go for gentle walks.
- Stay connected: Talk to your partner, family, or close friends about your feelings instead of bottling them up.
- Prioritize self-care: Eat nutritious foods, get enough rest, and be kind to yourself—your health directly affects your baby’s well-being.
- Avoid unhealthy comparisons: Don’t compare yourself or your body to other mothers. Every pregnancy is unique, and growth depends on individual physical and nutritional conditions.
- Stay away from fear-driven spaces: Avoid forums, social media posts, or people who spread unnecessary worry.
- Rely on expert advice: Don’t ask people who are not medically informed for guidance. Following all these steps helps you maintain peace of mind and enjoy a smooth pregnancy.
Final Thoughts
I know that pregnancy can be challenging for every mother. Yet, the sweetness of the journey is undeniable—the baby’s little kicks that bring joy, cravings for delicious foods, changes in your body, and the wonderful feeling of becoming a mother. All of these challenges culminate in the ultimate reward: holding your child at the end of nine months.
Every worry, every challenge, and every sleepless night will be worth it when you finally embrace your little one in your arms.
