My journey as a mum

My life and how my boys have taught me

By Kimber BitoPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

You might be wondering why I’m writing about being a mum of five boys. Lots of people have lots of children, right?

Yes, that's so true, but ever since I had my first son, I felt like I was embarking on a unique journey, a journey that was punctuated by both chaos and an indescribable joy. It wasn't just the number of boys, but the intense energy, the constant whirlwind of testosterone, the competitive spirit, the unwavering loyalty, and the depth of their love that made me feel like I was living in a world exclusively designed for them — a world where trucks and dinosaurs ruled supreme.

People often ask me, 'How do you do it?' Their eyes widen in amazement as they listen to my tales of five rambunctious boys, each with his unique personality and quirks. I'm not going to lie, it takes a lot of patience, a good dose of humor, and a truly unwavering belief in the power of love.

There are days, filled with wrestling matches in the living room, a constant stream of 'I'm hungry' requests, and an endless array of dirty laundry, that make me want to run away and live in a quiet cabin in the woods. But then I look at their faces, filled with the purest form of love and adoration, and I remember that the chaos is just a part of the story, a story that is woven with the threads of laughter, shared moments, and a love that transcends any hardship.

Raising five boys has been a crash course in understanding the male psyche. I've learned that boys crave adventure, they thrive on competition, and they need a safe space to express their feelings, even if it's through a fistfight with their brother. I've learned that a hug can be more comforting than a lecture, that a game of catch can be more bonding than a long conversation, and that their love, though often expressed through boisterous laughter and roughhousing, is deeply genuine and unyielding.

They've taught me the importance of teamwork, of standing up for what you believe in, of celebrating the small victories, and of never giving up on your dreams. They've challenged me to be a better version of myself, to be patient, to be resilient, and to embrace the imperfections that come with being human.

There have been moments of sheer despair, times when I felt like I was drowning in a sea of dirty socks and forgotten homework assignments. But in those moments, I've also found an incredible strength, a resilience that I never knew I possessed. And I've realized that the challenges are not meant to break me, they are meant to shape me, to help me grow, to make me a stronger, more compassionate, and ultimately, more human version of myself.

Being a mum of five boys is not always easy. It's an adventure filled with ups and downs, with laughter and tears, with moments of pure joy and moments of utter exhaustion. It's a journey that pushes you to your limits, that makes you question your sanity, but also a journey that ultimately fills your life with an abundance of love, laughter, and a sense of purpose that you never knew existed.

So, if you ever find yourself questioning why I choose to write about this life, know that it's not just about the number of children, it's about the profound impact they've had on my life, the lessons they've taught me, and the love that they've so generously poured into my heart. It's a story that's uniquely mine, a story that's filled with both chaos and an indescribable joy, and a story that reminds me every single day that the most beautiful adventures are often the ones we never planned for.
