Modernity of the Smart Generation vs. Islam and Humanity

Embracing True Modernity through Islam and Humanity

By Md. Solayman Hossain SabujPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Many young people who grew up in small towns under the watchful eyes of their parents come to the bright or colorful cities in search of jobs or higher education. Some see these cities as colorful and beautiful, but others, when they arrive, lose sight of their goals. They come to these big cities with hopes of seeing life in a new way, but sometimes they get lost among the thousands of people here.

In the name of modernity, many young people get involved in relationships under the pretext of friendship after entering university. These relationships often don’t last, and after they break up, some become labeled as "playboys" or "girls." On the other hand, some people start posting sad statuses on Facebook or other social media, and some, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, even think of suicide or leave their studies and go back home to spend their time crying.

Those who take their money and focus on doing good things, try to build their lives in the right way, often get labeled as stingy or selfish. Meanwhile, those who go out with their boyfriends or girlfriends, wander around parks or restaurants, and get involved in multiple love affairs or deceive people, are considered "modern smart generation."

But what is true modernity? Many people think of modernity as being stylish or fashionable. However, real modernity is about mental growth, which includes helping others, being humble, speaking the truth, not deceiving anyone, being compassionate, and living a righteous life. Islam teaches us this true modernity, which is not only about appearance, but also about inner purity.

Hijab and Human Values in Islam:

When modernity and Islam clash, the teachings of Islam help us understand real modernity. Islam shows us the right way of life, where living with ethics, compassion, confidence, and decency is key. In Islam, the concept of hijab is introduced, not only as a physical covering but as a way to maintain mutual respect and decency in society.

Hijab or covering is often associated with women, but in the Qur'an, Allah first mentions the hijab for men. In Surah An-Nur, verse 30, Allah says, "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts." (Surah An-Nur: 30). After this, the instruction for women to cover themselves is given. The main point here is that hijab in Islam is not only about physical covering but also about maintaining social decency and respect.

Many people don’t understand the importance of hijab, but its main purpose is to protect society from disturbance and preserve human decency. Just like when driving at night, even if another car’s headlights are on, you turn on your own headlights to ensure your safety. Similarly, hijab helps protect our safety and dignity in society.

True Form of Modernity:

Modernity is not just about fashion or external appearance; its real meaning lies in respect for others, ensuring their rights, living with honesty, and walking on the path of truth. Modernity is actually about purifying our mind, vision, and thoughts so that we do not speak lies, deceive others, or forget the true essence of life.

Modernity is not arrogance, but humility; it is about speaking the truth, helping others, and living with respect for human dignity. Islam teaches us these values. In the Islamic view, modernity is the real development of humanity, which helps us grow spiritually and socially.

Returning to the Path of Islam:

Today, many people are straying from Islam due to social pressures and the influence of external modernity. But Allah says, "Islam is not just words; it must be demonstrated through action." (Qur'an). We must follow the true path of Islam, so that we can live a life of truth, decency, and moral values.

This is the true modernity, which is not just about outer appearances but about inner purity and the fulfillment of social and familial responsibilities. Islam shows us the right path, and when we follow its guidance, our life becomes truly meaningful and beautiful.

We will shape our lives based on the guidance of Allah and the teachings of Rasulullah (PBUH). He said, "Islam is not just words; it must be demonstrated through action." (Qur'an). If we follow some parts of Islam and ignore others, that is not true Islam. Today, many deviations from Islam are happening in society. So let us follow the true path of Islam and lead our lives according to its light.
