Legend Hunter
1973 North Florida, Kate Turner one of the few people who still believes in legends. This story is how Kate discovered a new legend. Kate just got home from another disappointing trip from Olympic national forest. Only to find out that she has still not found enough proof that the big foot actually exists. So Kate goes to write in her little black book only to express her grief, worried she may never find big foot. So back to the books to find more evidence. While she was looking for big foot’s tale, she stumbled across a map that tells of a new-so called legend. Gold in the mountains of Wyoming. Kate called her office and asked for a new case in Wyoming, they granted it, and she packed a bag. She didn’t pack much she didn’t have much hope in this one, she left the next day. She arrived at 3:00 AM, she was tired. Her eyes were so heavy she had black rings under her eyes, so she left the airport in a cab and when she arrived at the base of the grand Tetons, she was ready to get her hands dirty. Kate found a good flat spot to camp, she sets up a tent and starts to boil some water for tea to keep warm. And goes up on the mountain to see what she is working with. “Not bad,” she thought.
The view was spectacular. She picks a spot that looks rocky, she grabbed her handy dandy pick axe.She starts striking the earth and starts her journey to find gold. It wasn’t long before the sun started to set. She went back to camp and had some soothing tea that ran down her throat and she gave a long, “aah.” Then again, she started to write in her little black book.
after three weeks of digging and not seeing 1 spec of gold, she decided to move camp farther east, where she hoped to have better luck. She walked several miles to get to a good spot, her feet hurt so bad like someone was stabbing them. She was walking with a stick to ease her pain. When she stopped to set up camp, she had lifted her boots and her worn down socks. She saw red, swollen blood blisters on the bottom and sides of both of her feet. And her hands had bubble blisters and calluses on them. She was barely crunching her hands in a ball without flinching at the pain. It had been weeks and nothing, Kate is thinking of leaving soon back to Florida if she does not find something soon. The next day she had some bitter black Coffee, under cooked bacon and crunchy scrambled eggs for breakfast. Kate isn’t much of a cook, obviously, but she ate it anyways with that gross face on and left for work. She walked a little farther than usual, she had a funny feeling today that she was going to find something. She started to swing at the ground with her tools. She hit one last time with all her might. The ground split as she started to fall through the cold ground. She thought to herself, “is this the end?!” She screamed as she felt her heart almost burst out of her chest. She could see water, she took what she thought was going to be her last breath. She closed her mouth and she felt the cold water. She swam up for air and couldn’t believe she was alive. As she swam to the shore, she could see people looking at her. They looked scared, as if they never seen someone fall through the ground before. Kate hoped to never be that person again. She saw a cave with children inside. Had Kate found something new?! As she looked around, the people flinched with every move that she made. She tried to tell them that everything was alright but they didn’t understand. She was in a new civilization. She stayed and learned their ways. She ate what they did...bitter roots, moles and whatever else they could find. A search team was there. She was supposed to be back months ago when people found her. The new world was hard to think that there was another place besides here. It went on for miles. When civilization brought Kate back, her only requests were that the underground world would not be a big deal. They closed the hole up and they got back to their life. We got on with ours. The government called Kate and told her on march 2 that they would love to have her come and collect her reward. Maybe give a speech. She accepted and did an awkward dance when she hung up the phone. On the day when she walked up that stage, her hands were shaking, her breathe was heavy. She couldn’t believe she was here today. When they gave her a check worth 20,000 dollars, her mouth dropped as she she cried with excitement. In her speech she said “This is such an honor. I love my job and I had an amazing few months with the people. They are so interesting. The way they think, the way they do, the way they live it’s so impressive how they still live like that. Thank you so much for this check! I know why I became a legend hunter agent... it was the excitement! Thank you all!” Kate went on with her life and had kids of her own. Someday we’ll take them back there to have an adventure of their own, to live life the way they want to.
