An Awkward Weight
Misery. No other word encapsulated Celia’s agony. She scanned the skies but found no hope of relief from the scorching sun. Its hostile rays broiled her skin - including the naked scalp revealed between the braided rows of hair. Her usual mocha brown complexion now appeared burnished to a deep mahogany. Or maybe some of it was dirt - which covered her from head to foot. Gone were her girlish curves - her once 5’ 7”, 130 pounds now appeared thin, muscled, and most unladylike.

Diary of a King
The day started like any other Thursday morning: alarm clock blaring, birds chirping, breeze at my window. I sit up in my bed, stretch like a grizzly awakening from a past winter’s slumber, and rest my feet on the cold tiles in my bedroom. As I make my way to the bathroom for that glorious morning pee, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror.

When One Door Closes
I have never liked getting the mail. The trek out of my house, down the walkway, across the street to the metal box to retrieve ads and bills has always felt like more work than it is worth. Today, though, my mother called. The check was delivered. I needed to get off my lazy butt and go and fetch it.

We Are Not Our Scars
Wiping the tears from my face I place the razor back into the bathroom drawer next to my sister’s loose hair clips, the half-used roll of tums, and a broken pair of glasses that I think belonged to my grandfather. So many random things. I find myself feeling random at time, like maybe I had a purpose but know I’m just a forgotten nothing in a drawer that no one looks in.

Little Black Book
Seleste had been in the study looking over the paperwork and documents that her late aunt Nadia had left to assist in the settlement of her affairs once she passed away. She heard shuffling in the library nearby and tiptoed over. She looked toward the front door and thought " oh my gosh how could I be so careless and leave the door open".

A Bowl of Rice
It was contained within the home of those each who believed something different about it. After appearing out of nowhere one day it sat on the counter taking up a blueish tint on the inside and outside with a brown rim adding a hint of decor. The dwellers of this house had naturally created a hierarchy among the four of them based on the level of wisdom that they possessed and they regarded each other in this way. Each of these had their own room and their own space in which they lived and so each of them never really had a reason to communicate with one another, they simply lived side by side without disturbance until this strange appearance welcomed itself into their household. The home in which the bowl sat held four occupants. Two males and two females. All of about the same age, but two which were of a higher maturity than the other two. These two were the ones who kept the house contained and in order. Many things were not done without them knowing about it or at least finding out promptly after it occurred. So it was quite surprising that when the blue bowl filled with grains of rice appeared, these two did not know the manner in which it came into existence. These two even went so far as to ask the two less wise occupants of the household if they knew anything about the bowl, but neither knew where it came from.
