It Is That Deer Hunting Time Again!

Grandchildren hunt and this year the hubby is hunting again, after a few years’ hiatus!

My plan for hunting this year is to help a Tupperware lady friend sell Tupperware the first week in her stand at the YMCA. Hubby is hunting with a couple of grands this year, with the one hoping for another streak. This weekend hubby is kicking back and taking a break.

This week has been a backbreaker getting the winterization finished he says and there will probably be no steak. Last year a grand sat on the deck and hubby was in the house hollering “Shoot, Austin shoot!” I knew he would be hunting this year, my dear old coot!

This weekend the grands can be out early to hunt. No one on day one, no one on day two, and then last night one called and said, “Pick me up after your trip to Hibbing, (he said with a grunt.) I am hunting tomorrow.”

Last year he got a deer early on day one and on day two he got another one, so no need to get some from the neighbor or borrow. Not bad for his first hunting experience. That meant he would be staying overnight to have a re-experience.

We fixed him up in the spare bedroom, except I didn’t make the bed. You could tell there was a pile on the chair with sheets, blankets, and pillows at his stead. Nope, when I went in to get my phone charger, there he was, no covers, no pillow or blanket just noticeable was his head.

The grandson was fully dressed, complete with a sweatshirt and his hair sticking out all over the place. He does have a full head of hair that guy.

He missed his 5:30 alarm he said in a panic, oh me. I told him that it was 7:15 and that didn’t he have someplace to be. His mother called to check in about 45 minutes later, just to see. I told her he was in the deer stand and she sounded in a panic, yes she. I said, yes, he is close and on the property!

The grandson hunting lives down the road from us, really pretty near.

He told me last night that his mom said he could get just one deer this year, so he may wait to get a buck! The hubby keeps telling him not to get his hopes up as hunting is different each year, and depends on luck. He can’t expect it ever to be like what happened last year, that would suck.

No one would be able to live with him if that happened two years in a row. We would have to put him out there with a bow.

Hubby worked hard to get the grand set up for his hunt, the only one. He made a deer stand and took the gun out yesterday, just in case a grand hunted, the hon. He didn’t want the grand struggling to get into the stand with the gun.

He is fifteen, so I was surprised he would be going out by himself so early as he’s a bit stunted. He hunted off the deck last year as we have a large field that comprises most of 40 acres. This year he will be in the deer stand.

Well, he is back! After two hours in the grandstand. It was 46 degrees when he went out! Hubby called him a ‘wussy’ when he got back. I said I thought he would make it until noon. He said it was too cold and he was out there for 2 hours!

This is the opening weekend for youth in Minnesota. This is still not the runt, as there are one or two more that will be coming along to hunt. Not sure their baby will hunt as the baby is a girl. So far she doesn’t have an interest. I know that can change, but it never did for me.

I have female friends and relatives that hunt.

Then some will do as I have done when the hubby was hunting. I would shop, go to shows, parties, and crafts with friends, and maybe work with bunting.

One year when I was younger we went to a show where men performed for the ladies a bit. It was funny, funny, funny and my honey didn’t appreciate it. It was a blast, with so many others out and about with me. I could see it was a time set aside to be free. I looked forward with glee.

Once was enough and we had our laughs and teasing and jokes. Now it is all about being old folks. We will drink our cokes and enjoy memories of the childhood we can evoke.

What will I do instead, I don’t want to miss out on everything and just go to bed. I will Christmas shop, stop by the coffee place, have a fancy coffee drink, and then buy myself a new top.

Today, I’m making apple, and berry sauce, and making soup to store. One year I will again take a trip up the north shore. We told stories and tribal lore. I’m cleaning out the freezer with the help of another grand, I’ll bet. One that isn’t hunting as he hasn’t gotten his permit yet.
