Those who are fortunate enough to be heading to New Zealand this summer will find that the islands are at their sunny best. Although cloudy days are part and parcel of a Kiwi summer, there are certain clothing and footwear items all travellers must have on hand if they wish to embark on outdoor excursions. From casual clothing options to must-have toiletries, here's a comprehensive packing guide for vacationers visiting New Zealand from December to February.

Summer in New Zealand: What to Expect

Summer is the season when temperatures in New Zealand are at their mildest as the months of December, January and February bring both sunny and overcast days with a chance of rain looming above travel itineraries throughout the season. North Island enjoys temperatures that fluctuate between 25°C and 12°C during summer while South Island temperatures are a tad colder with average highs and lows between 22°C and 10°C. This region is known for having some of the highest UV levels in the world. While the sunny days can be warm and unforgiving, the nights are often cold. It's recommended to layer clothing to prepare for the fluctuating temperatures. Summer is the peak tourist season and the busiest time of the year. Visitors should expect large crowds at most attractions and activity centres.

Day Bag/Backpack

Before packing one's belongings into a suitcase or luggage, it is important to choose a backpack or a day bag for the trip and toss it inside the main luggage. Ideal for those who intend to go camping or hiking during the visit, backpacks are a great way to keep one's belongings safe when using public transport networks in New Zealand. Make sure the bag is made from a durable and water-proof material so that the contents will not get wet in case of rain or other mishaps.

Clothing Essentials

Versatility and functionality are the two buzzwords that holidaymakers must keep in mind when packing clothes for a summer getaway in New Zealand. It's best to pack enough clothes to last a week as laundry services are accessible whether one is planning to stay at Avani Auckland Metropolis Residences or any other convenient Auckland city hotel. Leggings or sweatpants are must-haves for a New Zealand summer as these can be worn with different tops. A pair of shorts and hiking pants will also come in handy while visitors can get by on t-shirts and singlets when it comes to tops. Pack one long-sleeved top that can be worn to shield the arms from harsh sunlight while a hoodie or a sweater will also come in handy to stay warm on night-time excursions. A wind-proof jacket is also essential. Pack only woolen and cotton socks and make sure the undergarments packed for the trip are also made from cotton. Hiking shoes and flip-flops are all one will need when it comes to footwear while sunglasses and a cap will also help keep the eyes shaded.

Toiletries

In addition to basics such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, it is crucial to pack a tube of sunscreen and an insect-repellent spray for a trip to New Zealand. Moisturiser will also prove useful for those with sensitive skin although shampoo and conditioner are usually provided complimentary by most hotels and resorts.

Medical Needs

Having a small first-aid kit inside one's luggage is also prudent in a destination where most tourists will spend a great deal of time outdoors. Pack any prescription medications that must be taken regularly before adding some ibuprofen, antacids, antihistamines and anti-nausea pills. Disinfectant wipes and antiseptic cream are also necessary when travelling around while a few Band-Aids must also be safely packed into the day bag for cuts and scrapes.

Miscellaneous Items

A camera and chargers for one's mobile phone, laptop or tablet PC must be packed separately from the clothes and toiletries to prevent water damage.
