Since the Maldives is 99 per cent water, it is no surprise that there is a high demand for water-based activities. Snorkelling is one of the top excursions that visitors enjoy during their Maldivian vacation. Here is a guide on how to make the most of your snorkelling vacation in one of snorkelers’ favourite locations in the Maldives – South Ari Atoll.

The ideal time to engage in the sport

Snorkelling expeditions can generally be practised in the Maldives all year long as the archipelago boasts sunny weather conditions almost any day of the year. However, the peak season for snorkelling is during its dry spell. This falls from November to April. This is when the waters lie undisturbed, providing the best visibility for marine creatures, corals and water plants. You also get calm waters, which make it safe for swimming and diving in the sea.  This is great for divers of all levels of experience as they will find it easy to master the sport.  Underwater visibility can reach around 30 meters. You will be able to spot marine creatures easily then.

Engage in your snorkelling venture either in the morning or at dawn, or at dusk. This is when you can expect water visibility to be at its highest and marine creatures to come out from their hiding places. If you are hoping to stay at one of the best dive resorts in the Maldives, it might be wise to book it early during this period to avoid disappointment as an influx of tourists enters the island nation during these months.

The same cannot be said about the wet season, then. This flows throughout the months from May to October. Occasional showers can be expected then, but this generally leaves room for some snorkeling adventures. You will be able to set your eyes on larger sea creatures like whale sharks and manta rays then as plankton is disturbed by monsoon currents.

Best snorkeling spots

There are many popular snorkelling sites which cater to snorkelling enthusiasts of all skill levels. Each site also offers its own unique excursions. South Ari Atoll is one of the most popular places you can stay for some exceptional snorkelling adventures. Guests at a property like Nova Maldives have easy access to several well-known diving sites as well as a house reef. They will get the opportunity to see manta rays and whale sharks in their natural habitat.

Another great snorkelling and diving site you can explore is Madivaru Rangali which is also known as Manta Point. It makes a great snorkelling destination, especially when manta rays are attracted to the cleaning station during the northeast monsoon's outgoing currents.

If you love to explore the mysteries of the underwater world, then consider visiting Kudhi Maa Wreck. This is a Japanese cargo ship which lies submerged at around 30 meters. Stretching up to around 52 meters, this vessel is an artificial coral setting that many snorkelers find enchanting to inspect. If you have an underwater camera, this is a great spot to take some memorable clicks.

What to encounter there

The Maldives is rich in marine biodiversity. You get a variety of vibrant coral reefs and all sorts of marine creatures like reef fish, manta rays, blacktip reef sharks, whale sharks, sea turtles and more at such destinations. You will also encounter schools of fusiliers, sting rays, Indian mackerels, puffer fish, sea cucumbers, sea snails and crabs there.

There are also a variety of diving sites to choose from, which include reef areas, wreck dives, overhangs and tunnels. Each place encompasses its own amenities, making each snorkeling expedition memorable.

Etiquette and safety tips

•    Avoid touching coral reefs as they are fragile and take years to form.

•    Do not approach marine creatures as they can become aggressive about sudden moves. Keep a safe distance from them.

•    Follow safety rules as some areas may comprise strong currents.

•    Wear reef-friendly sunscreen to protect yourself from scorching sun rays.

•    If you are new to snorkelling, seek a guide to help you. Take snorkelling lessons to enhance your skills.
