Horrific Vacation

How a Famous Ghanaian Artist Disappeared Into The Volta River Never to be Found

By Anonymous TimPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

Castro Under Fire, or Castro as his family called him, went missing in 2014 under an unusual circumstance. Seven years later, after all, hope had seemed lost, he was declared dead by his family. Castro was a popular Ghanaian artist of the era, gaining recognition across African countries and even internationally. He had several AIDS-related albums and songs to his name and was known for his collaborations with other musicians. Unfortunately, in 2014 he disappeared while on vacation with a close friend - an event that caused much worry to his loved ones.

Castro was a very good friend of Asamoah Gyan, the then captain of the Ghanaian national football team. They were so close that they even had three albums released together. In July 2014, Gyan decided to go on a vacation with some of his friends. He invited Castro Under Fire. However, there was an issue with their yacht and they ended up going to another beach resort in Ghana instead. Castro couldn't attend this beach vacation with Gyan because he had to go to a funeral in Kumasi. Even the next day, when Gyan tried to reach out to him, Castro said that he couldn't go because he had to go to a funeral in Kumasi. Around the third or fourth of July, that was the day of the funeral Castro was supposed to attend. That same day, Gyan and his friends were supposed to go to the aqua Safari. However, Castro and his friends began their journey to the aqua Safari several days later than planned due to logistical issues.

However, by 7th July 2014, they had already arrived at their planned destination - an island resort - and were having a good time. Gyan was hesitant to ride a jet ski with his friends the next day, but he eventually agreed. On their way there, he felt something was off about the area they were going to. In the swampy mouth of the Volta River, Gyan sensed something wasn't right. However, his intuition didn't quite outweigh the instructor's assurance that everything was okay. The group rode back to the beach and had a good time.

Castro Under Fire was absent when Gyan warned the other boys about the swamping mouth of the Volta River. When Castro Under Fire arrived, he did not remember to tell the others about his previous instruction. By himself, Castro got on a jet ski and asked a video vixen named Janet Bandu or Janet Badu to join him. This is where things started to get tricky.

Jet skiing on a river can be fun, but it's important to wear a Life Jacket and to know how to swim. Janet got into Castro's jet ski but she didn't get in with a life jacket and the instructor clearly told them this is not the place to play around. Castro convinced everyone that he was good at riding the jet ski. This wasn’t his first time and he was a good swimmer so she had nothing to worry about. All she had to do was put her hand around his back and have a music video moment in the Volta River--that was it. Now Castro is in his jet ski with Janet Badu without an instructor and so the fun begins. Everyone was having fun--everyone had gone for the jet ski ride--and by the end of the day, everyone had returned, and the jet skis were parked when the jet ski manager went to come to find them. Gyan and his brother and friends were like "What's up, we missed one Jet Ski!"

No one knew what had happened although reports have stated that Janet may have fallen off the jet ski and Castro decided to take off his life jacket to swim down to get her and they both drowned that is what we know now however how we know this is because Gyan and some other group of people had claimed to have gone to meet the ‘Oracle’ (native doctor). They claimed to have gone to meet a native doctor/Seer who then told them that what happened in the river was that Janet fell off the jet ski and Castro Under Fire took off his life jacket to go and swim to save her and they both drowned. That is what we know now. It's not like anyone saw it happen for real because no one saw them. The last they saw of them was them riding into the sunset down at the deep end of the Volta River. What happened to them in that moment no one knows but that is the possibility that is the basic possible explanation as to what happened. Many people believe that Castro Under Fire was taken by Gyan and that he was probably used for money sacrifice or some other ritual. This looks like a mystery that may never be solved or may never be answered - his memory will go on to be this popular Ghanaian artist that went missing on a vacation.
