Fun Winter Crafts for Your Children

Finding things for your kids to do in the snow or during travel.

If your children are on holiday break from school, it may be difficult to find things for them to do during the cold winter days. Here are some tips for crafts that you can make to stay warm during the holiday season.

Glitter Ornament

A Christmas tree is not complete without ornaments and lights. Although you can purchase matching ornament sets from the store, it is much more personal and sentimental to have unique ornaments that are handmade. For example, you can make glitter ornaments with your children. All you need are clear ball ornaments, glitter, and some glue. Use a funnel to pour glitter into the ornament after you coat it with glue or another adhesive substance. Then, you can have glitter on the sides of the ball, as well as floating in the middle of the ornament. Your children can see their work displayed on the tree.

Fleece Scarf

There is no better way to stay warm in a pinch than a hat and scarf. It is incredibly easy to for you and your children to create customized scarves out of fleece fabric. You can choose your own fabric color or design, and decorate it with whatever you wish. A quick stop at your local craft store will allow you to get fabric glue, which is best for these types of projects, as well as things like jewels, feathers, and other items you can put on your scarves. To create a fringe without needing to sew, simply cut the ends of the scarf into even length strips, and tie them into knots. This is a great way to allow your children to have creativity and an item that they can use every day during the winter.

Stocking Holder

If your children want a unique holder to hang up their stocking with, then you can craft some with minimal skill and effort, but still have fun during a snow day. For instance, you can use spare wood to paint and decorate for a square-shaped present stocking holder. Your children can choose which colors and wrappings they would like their stocking holder to have, so that they will each have a unique piece to cherish. These types of stocking holders also fit in well with much of your other holiday accessories around the house. It is also a great item that your children can take with them when they move out of the house and have their own families.

Decorated Thermos

Reusable thermoses are a growing trend, both due to their reliability as well as their environmental friendliness. Take a day to customize your children's thermoses to their taste. This way, they will not lose their possessions as easily when they take them to school, and they are more likely to use an item that they helped to create. You can buy sheets of stickers with letters, animals, and other designs, or even get child safe paint that they can make their own designs with. This way, your child can carry hot soup, cocoa, or other warm liquids in style.

Cookie Tins

Cookies are always a treat during the holiday season, and make a wonderful gift for your family, friends, or loved ones. Rather than just putting the cookies on a plate or in a simple, store-bought tin, you can make tins that are decorated depending on who the recipient is. Make batches of cookies to give to important people in your life, and task your children with making them one of a kind. Your friends and family will love receiving not only the delicious sweets, but also a commemorative tin that they can use for other things.

It does not have to be overwhelming to figure out activities to do with your children when they are home for the holidays. With these tips, you are sure to not only keep your children entertained, but produce memorable gifts as well.
