FLIGHT OF HOPE

Empathy and grief

By Daniel OkangPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

The plane's engines roared to life as it taxied down the runway, picking up speed as it prepared to take off. Rachel's heart pounded in her chest as she gripped the armrests of her seat. She had never been a fan of flying, and this particular flight was especially nerve-wracking for her. She was on her way to a foreign country to visit her mother, who was battling cancer. Rachel hadn't seen her in months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions that followed. Her emotions were a mix of anxiety, sadness, and hope as she settled into her seat for the long flight ahead.

As the plane ascended into the sky, Rachel looked out the window, watching as the city below became smaller and smaller. She felt a pang of homesickness, knowing she was leaving behind her husband, Jake, and their two young children. They had been her rock throughout her mother's illness, but now it was time for Rachel to be there for her own mother. She took a deep breath, reminding herself why she was making this journey, and closed her eyes, hoping for a smooth flight.

As the hours passed, Rachel found herself struck by the diversity of the people on board the plane. There were families with young children, couples traveling together, and individuals from all walks of life. She wondered about their stories, their reasons for flying. Rachel realized that despite their different backgrounds and destinations, they were all connected in this shared experience of being on a plane, hurtling through the sky at 30,000 feet. It was a reminder that in the midst of life's challenges, we are all human, with our own struggles and hopes.

Rachel's thoughts kept drifting back to her mother. She remembered the day she received the news of her mother's diagnosis. It had been a shock that turned her world upside down. Rachel had been juggling her responsibilities as a wife, mother, and working professional, but her mother's illness had forced her to confront her own vulnerability. She realized that life could change in an instant and that time with loved ones was precious.

As Rachel pondered her emotions, a flight attendant approached her with a warm smile, offering her a drink. Rachel politely declined, but she appreciated the gesture. She found comfort in the kindness of strangers, which seemed to shine through during this flight. The flight attendants were compassionate and attentive, providing comfort to passengers who were anxious or needed assistance. It reminded Rachel of the importance of human connection and empathy, even in the midst of a challenging situation like flying during a pandemic.

Rachel's mind drifted back to memories of her mother. She remembered their special bond and how her mother had always been her source of strength and guidance. She recalled their shared love for cooking and how they would spend hours in the kitchen, laughing and sharing stories. Rachel missed those moments dearly, and her heart ached at the thought of her mother's illness.

Midway through the flight, turbulence shook the plane, causing Rachel's heart to skip a beat. She gripped her armrests tightly, feeling a surge of anxiety. She took deep breaths, trying to calm herself down, and reminded herself that turbulence was a normal part of flying. She glanced around and noticed that some of her fellow passengers looked nervous as well, while others remained calm. It struck her how each person coped with fear and uncertainty differently, but they were all united in this moment, facing the same challenge.

Rachel decided to distract herself from her worries by engaging in conversation with the passenger sitting next to her. She learned that his name was Mark and he was traveling to attend a funeral of a close friend. Mark shared his story of loss and grief, and Rachel listened with empathy, offering a
