Dying to live

A story

By Callie ShawnPublished 5 years ago 5 min read

“Death is a promise that we all share. Life just happens and then all of a sudden death is there.” Little Luna wrote this in her journal, wise beyond here years. Reminiscing on the events that lead her right here.

Before we come back here, we must first go there. In order to get here we must always go there.

Luna was 11 and to her she had it all. A loving family who saw her and never made her feel alone. She was a quirky being and her light shined bright. She loved to learn new things and especially loved being up at night.

Her parents were artists in all that they did. Together they shared a farm and with love they took care of it.

Her brother was older and she loved him dearly. He had a good heart but he couldn’t see clearly. He was a boat afloat but sinking from his own water. He learned to turn to drugs and no longer felt like her brother.

On a cold foggy night Luna sat by her window. Cracking it open to let in the breeze. It gave her a cool hug and put her mind at ease.

Luna was grateful for her family and all that she had. She was very in tune with the universe and saw all the magic it had. Her family had a good life but her brothers problem was like a virus.

His self destructive habits left little light in the house. Her mom was an enabler and never wanted to put him out. Dad was growing angry and wanted to disown his son. They both didn’t understand what they might have done to their son. They were perplexed and didn’t know what to do next.

You see they did not understand that it was not them. They couldn’t have known the pain he was dealing within. No one was at fault. It was something that just happened. It was all apart of the process and they had no clue what could happen.

As Luna sat by her window looking out to Mother Nature. She was awed in disbelief when she saw a majestic creature. A barn owl had flown out of the dark and into her sight. Wow she thought to herself ‘what a beautiful eary night’

A feeling came over her. One she could not shake. It was heavy, intense, and it stayed to linger. The feeling itself felt like a stranger.

She called it a night and went to her bed. Not knowing what life would be when she opened her eyes next.

Crack! Lunas eyes opened to the sound of commotion. Downstairs there was chaos and her bedroom door was open. A part of her did not want to go. Inside her gut she knew that downstairs was were she must go.

She heard cries from her father and a rage that came from him like no other. She got halfway down the stairs and that was when she saw mother.

Down on the ground with her head in a pool of blood. No sudden movements and a draining of love. Luna froze right there while giving a blank looking stare. Her mother was dead and it was all because of her brothers friend.

Her brother owed a debt that he had not paid. His friend was no friend but a demon indeed. One who lead him down a dark path of pain. He was a man who lurked in darkness and sucked people down like a drain.

The man couldn’t get his money. He decided to take a life instead. For mothers essence was priceless but in this timeline she was now dead.

Luna now understood why the owl had come. His flight in was a warning of what was to come. She knew in her heart that the dark lurking feeling. Was a synchronicity from the universe to shed light from its meaning.

Luna went to bed that night and saw the owl in her dream. At first glance scared because of what it might mean.

This time the owl talked and gave her a message. It was about death and it’s very passage.

The owl went on to shed light in the dark. Describing death as a portal. There was no absence of life. The life has transformed and composted into light around us. The physical body is gone but mothers warm essence will always surround us.

You can step in the portal and learn from its teachings. Or you can wallow in sorrow and lose sight of the meaning.

Luna woke up with tears in her eyes. She was grateful that her mother had died. From that thought came an odd feeling but she knew that death has such great meaning.

In lunas society death is taboo. People are scared and no one wants to talk it through. Its wrapped up with fear and stored far away. The people forgot that we must carry death with us each day. To Luna death was a friend. One that she would know all the way to the end.

As it goes, time went on. The family learned to live with the absence of Mom.

At first father was angry and put blame on his son. Disturbed by life itself and what his family had become.

Brother was quiet, and lived his life in silence. No words for him to speak. In his heart he felt weak.

As the weeks went on so did their lives. Luna stood strong. Living for herself and mother’s life.

Luna shared her experience with her family. Through her strength they were able to go within. Within the pain they found there was light. Even in the darkest of days. Together they would all shine bright.

Eventually brother got better and did away with bad habits. He started to help father with the farm and from their the relationship flourished. Father smiled because he realized he had it. He still had his wife through his children that lived. He still shared their love because he was able to go on and live.

Things got better and there was more light than before. Mother’s death was a portal and together the family opened a door.

A door to a new beginning where love would reside. A time for gratitude and the appreciation that they were all still alive.

Mother’s death woke them up. She needed to go to turn on the light. Everything happens for a reason. Even if that reason doesn’t feel right.

Little Luna stepped into the portal when it came. She gained the lessons and blessings without having to place blame. For death is no ones fault. It’s a calculated action. The universe is in control and it guides us to to the reasons of why it must happen.

It is a friend, a teacher, and sometimes feels like a foe. The most important lesson she learned was that she must carry death with her wherever she goes.

When we carry death without letting it weigh us down. The gratitude shines out and allows us to live in the now.

Now Luna is back where she was in the beginning of this tale. Writing in her journal with lots of words to share. She might not have her mother but she still has it all. The last line she wrote was “through love and acceptance we can always have it all”
