Don't Let "The Real Life Monopoly Game" Ruin Your Child's (or Your) Creativity

It's in my opinion the most common mistake parents make because they Aren't Aware it's Happening!!!

By Travis McDonaldPublished 5 years ago 5 min read

My dad I and were discussing the other night the way the cruel old world has a way of just grinding up a lot of people and spitting them out of the other side. We got to talking and both feverishly agreed the Monopoly game that is life destroys most people's creative side of their whole personality.

We are programmed. We as people. We start off with basic school up until high school. Training your mind. Brainwashing you that those 8 hours are going to be the most important for the rest of your days. Then their is college, this is supposed to weed out the people who are willing to spend the time and pull the grades to graduate. For example, I graduated in Chemical Engineering and I learned nothing about my job from school. I learned my first few years on the job to be honest. Guess what, my dad is a Chemical Engineer too.

I always really enjoyed music, hip-hop to be honest, but it was always beat down, I was never taken seriously. My creative side of my personality has been suppressed since I was a child. My dad didn't know any better he just wanted the best for me, but what if it wasn't? What if I was a Macklemore, or Jack Harlow, etc. Who says I don't drop an album still? The point is during Covid and with the recent developments of crypto-currencies I have had a chance a long side my dad to just live life. To not be forced to play that Monopoly Game and go to "Work For The Man" all day just to be taxed ridiculously.

I have so many ideas, there is a whole side of me I am really only now being able to live life. Because working Full time doing Process Engineering or any career, working big jobs will take it out of you. The pressure is immense. By the time you get done. There isn't anything left to offer anyone else. There's not enough left to offer your family.

But your providing for your family. How happy are they though? How much do you get to see them? Your whole life you have been taught that time equals money. However time is the only thing you can't buy. It is priceless. I say spend as much time as you can with the people you love. You can get to the point where working for the "man" becomes obsolete. On top of that, the way that taxes are set up it makes a lot more sense to invest than to work. Look at the difference in the way the tax income via wages vs capital gains? Working for the "man" has become obsolete and people will start to see it more and more.

When they do. When they encourage that side of your child's mind don't be surprised when you end up with the next famous singer, poet, author, etc. I'm old now (36) and I am going to drop a rap album for the hell of it and blow some people's minds. I'm going to do it for myself but hopefully I have some fun and who knows maybe I'll surprise someone.

I have a daughter and she is being brain-washed already as well. She goes to school, makes straight A's, but I encourage any creative ideas she has and make sure to tell her to do what makes you happy. Be with who makes you happy. Don't accept a mediocre job or living or man or anything. You are a princess that will one day be a Queen. You can do anything that you want to. Don't be restricted to what school says you can be. What interests you really? She is now 10 years old and somewhat mature for her age so I would love any information on her interests I can get anyway.

Life ain't about the fastest car, hottest chick (helps immensely and never give up), or the most money cause you can't take it with you. If you can form a bond spending time with a child and bring that creative side out in ways they never would of dreamed possible.

My daughter, 10, is a Harry Potter Nut. She has read the whole series, and some more than once. She also likes to write stories, short stories mainly so far but chapter books later she says. I only tell you this because I never want to see that part of her shine go away. When someone finds a way to get paid for something they love then they are very fortunate.

I guess since this is my article I guess I will give my opinion on this one. We all tell our kids they are special , beautiful, and going to be stars one day. right? Don't We? I like to think we do. I know I do.

How come when they mention something you don't agree with as a parent or isn't part of the plan or say it is something they have a very small chance of being at least encourage them to explore it. Don't ever tell a kid/maturing adult " No don't get that tattoo bruh, it just makes you look less intelligent". or to a kid "No your a white kid from nowhere there is no way you can make it in rap? People tend to believe what they are told/shown. But people all around us do amazing things everyday and I continue to see it happen. Be a roll-model for your kids. I know I can do better. We probably all can. Right now I can focus on keep giving my daughter every opportunity I had and more. If you need help ask for it. I'm being helped.

I also want to reach out to all of the other parents out there busting their backs trying to provide and doing everything you can. Maybe you don't have anybody to help...I admire you. If you can stack up a lil bit of cash and then start investing and let that money work for you then you can make working for a company obsolete very quickly (lol). Maybe one day your kids won't be in some of the positions you were in growing up.... Who knows maybe they will. A lot of times kids will be kids know matter how good of parents we think we are being because most of the time the kid is too afraid to let the parent know who they even really are. I am in no means giving any kind of parental advice. I am just giving my opinion in these articles. Thanks for reading.

Let a kid explore being a rapper, let him explore being a painter, photographer. If they put a work ethic behind it and add time then the chances are you're going to be very surprised at what your child creates. Who knows how many great minds we lost to the monopoly game. We as people are programmed all the way from grade-school to work. Encourage more of the creative ideas your kids have, especially if they are really working at it.

Thanks,

Travis McDonald
