Scarlett wanted to go to the park. Broomus wanted to go to the bakery. So Scarlett tells Broomus, “We will go to the bakery after our day at the park. But we have to get ready now.”
Scarlett got a picnic basket and looked at the kitchen. “Broomus, what would you like for lunch?”
Broomus looks around and says loudly, “Cake!”
“But Broomus, we can’t have cake until after we have had lunch. And look, there is no cake in the refrigerator.”
Broomus faints with all four of his paws in the air. Scarlett says, “Broomus! How about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead?”
Broomus perks up and gets back on all fours. Scarlett pulls out the strawberry jam, peanut butter, and wheat bread. She then pulls out a plate and a butter knife. She looks at Broomus, “So which one do you want me to put on first?”
Broomus says with conviction, “Peanut Butter first. How is the jam going to stick if you don’t put the peanut butter first? And don’t forget the sprinkles and marshmallows…” Scarlett gives Broomus a scolding look, “Broomus, you know that only jam or jelly and peanut butter go on this sandwich, right?”
“But I " as his face scrunches up, "I thought it would taste even better with marshmallows, Scarlett!”
“No! Broomy, there is no way I am going to put all of that on a sandwich two together with that. Yuck!” Scarlett makes a funny face. “Do you want carrots and cucumbers cut up to go with our sandwiches?”
Broomus looks at her. “But, you won’t let me have marshmallows and sprinkles with my sandwich. So why would I want carrots and cucumbers with it?”
“Then I‘ll have some cucumbers and carrots. Then we’ll pack it up in our basket and go to the park for a picnic. And then we can play afterwards.” Broomus rummages around the cabinets and finds some cookies. He pulls out the Oreos.”Can we have some of these with our lunch?”
Scarlett sighs, “Ok, we can have a few cookies. But if you want a cake, you can only have a few.”
Broomus starts pulling out a few stacks of Oreo’s and begins to count them out into two bags. “One for you, and two for me. One for you, and two for me.” Broomus quickly slips the overfilled bag of cookies into the basket. As he begins to put in the second bag, Scarlett sees him sneak a cookie and begins to scold him. “Broomus if you eat those now, you will not have enough for dessert. Do you want to take a ball to the park?”
Broomus runs and gets his ball as Scarlett grabs the baskets filled with the picnic lunch. The park is a short walk from Scarlett and Broomus’s home. They walk to the gate and open it. Scarlett lets Broomus out and returns the gate door and locks it. She takes Broomus' paw and walks down the path that opens up to the park.
There is a large green field and a small play area with swings. Over to the left is a place where there are picnic tables. Broomus starts to run to the picnic area. Scarlett shakes her head and yells to Broomus. “We’re going to eat after we’ll play for a bit. Melissa said she would be coming with Mimzy.”
Broomus stops and drops the ball. “Why would she bring her bunny? That bunny is odd. She is always plotting against me.” Broomus stands and looks at Scarlett with a pouty look. Scarlett looks up and waves at Melissa as Mimzy is hopping alongside her.
“Hi! How are you and Broomus doing today? We are ready to play and have fun. Isn’t that right, Mimzy?” Melissa looks down at a white bunny with black-lined eyes and white fluffy fur. Mimzy covers her eyes with her paws when she sees Broomus.
Scarlett lays out a large blanket as she sees her friend, Angela. Angela arrives with her basket and sets it on the blanket while a large fluffy orange cat curls up on a corner. “Sorry I’m late, but Fifi wanted to join us. So I had to bring him along.” Fifi grumbles, “Someone has to keep you out of trouble, Angela.”
“Who wants to go on the swings?” Scarlett asked. Melissa and Angela nod their heads yes and take off with Scarlett. Broomus lies down by the basket, reaches in, and pulls out the cookies. An orange paw lands on Broomus' paw. “Scarlett will be mad if you eat the cookies before lunch.”
Broomus looks at the big orange cat. “Well Fifi, would you like to play some ball?” The big orange cat yawns and gets on his feet. Broomus paws the ball to Fifi and Fifi catches it and paws it back. They do this for a bit and suddenly Mimzy swipes the ball and runs away with it towards the girls. Fifi and Broomus run after her. She looks back and runs under Angela’s legs.
Angela looks down and smiles at Mimzy. “What do you have…” Suddenly, Broomus and Fifi smack into the back of Angela’s legs, knocking her over. Mimzy moves quickly, running over to Melissa and hides behind her.
Melissa and Scarlett run over to help Angela up. “Broomus, why did you do that to Angela?” Broomus looks up to Scarlett, “We didn’t mean to but Mimzy stole the ball.” Melissa looks down at Mimzy and shakes her head. “ Did you steal their ball?”
Mimzy hides the ball behind her back. “They didn’t let me play. So I joined in and they got mad that I got the ball.” Angela starts to laugh as she pets Fifi. “It’s ok. We are good.” She looks down to the bear. “Is anybody hungry yet?”
“Yes!” Melissa and Scarlett both shout. They giggle and walk over to the blanket Scarlett had spread out. Mimzy hands the ball back to Broomus. Scarlett starts pulling out things from her basket, Angela brings out things from her basket, and Melissa pulls out her stuff from her basket as well.
Angela pulls out tuna fish sandwiches, celery, chips, a bowl of tuna for Fifi, and a mysterious box.
Melissa brings out a bag of carrots, kale, and other green things. She pours some out onto a plate and gives it to Mimzy. Mimzy darts at it and begins munching on a piece of kale. Melissa then brings out some strange sandwiches that Broomus grimace at. Scarlett set a sandwich in front of Broomus. She notices Broomus staring at Melissa’s sandwiches “What’s wrong, Broomus?”
Broomus looks down at his plate. “This isn’t a cucumber sandwiches like what Melissa is eating, is it?”
“No, Broomus. It’s a peanut butter and jam sandwich. Eat up if you want to have any cookies.” Scarlet looks at the crazy bear. She placed one carrot on his plate. “Eat one of these, too.”
Angela looks down as Fifi comes over and finds a large bowl of mixed berries in her bag. She opens the bowl and sets in the middle of the blanket. She takes out a strawberry and offers it to Mimzy. Mimzy takes it, smiles up at her, then runs off behind Melissa. Melissa looks down and says, “What do you say Mimzy?”
Mimzy looks around to Melissa with strawberry juice covered lips and says, “Thank you, Miss Angela.”
They eat their lunches and talk when the alarm on Scarlett’s phone goes off. She looks down at Broomus. “We need to tidy up and start at the bakery to pick up the cake that Mom ordered for dinner tonight.”
Broomus jumps up and puts all of the cookies and stuff from lunch into Angela’s bag, grabs Angela’s hand, and pulls her in the direction of the bakery. She looks down at him and laughs. “Broomus you forgot to say bye to the girls, Fifi, and Mimzy.” Angela looks back at the group. “I’m sorry about this but there is a party for my mom tonight and I promised to pick up the C-A-K-E for her. Bye for now, see you soon.” She reaches down to give a scratch on Fifi’s ear and pulls out a blackberry for Mimzy to give to her. Angela picks up her bag and begins to walk to the bakery.
Broomus runs beside her while singing, “Cake, cake we’re gonna get cake. Isn’t this great? One piece for you and two for me. I love cake!”
They arrive at the shop. The baker leans down and says, “Ah, Mr. Broomus, I have a special surprise for you. And, Miss Scarlett, your box is ready, but be careful.” A large box and a smaller one were sitting on the counter waiting for them. Scarlett looks at both boxes. “What is the smaller box?’
The baker looks down. “Why, it is a new cake for Broomus. I thought I would see if he likes it before I release it to the public.”
Scarlett takes both boxes carefully as she looks at Broomus. “What do you say to the baker?”
Broomus smiles as he looks up at the Baker. “That is great. Thanks for the cake.”
Scarlett and Broomus made it home just as her mom finished cooking dinner.
Ms. Reign smiles. “You two look like you had a good day, but why are you holding two boxes instead of one?” She takes the boxes from Scarlett. Scarlett looks up and smiles. “The other is especially for Broomus. The baker is using him to taste test the cake.” They leave the shop and return home.
As they walk into the backdoor they hear, “Well, go get ready for dinner. You both must eat your dinner. Green beans for Broomus!” Ms. Reign begins serving dinner and everyone sits down to eat. Scarlett ate all of her dinner and looked over to Broomus and sees him feeding the green beans to Scarlett grandmother's Golden Retriever that came to visit. “Broomus, mom is going to be mad if you don’t eat them yourself.”
“Broomus looks at the dog and smiles. “Sorry, boy. No more green beans.” Broomus then eats the last two on his plate with a funny face. “YUCK!”
Ms. Reign pulls out a beautiful red velvet cake for Scarlett, and a strange black and white cake that looks like Broomus' favorite cookies. Her mom gives her a slice and hands the smaller cake to Broomus.
Broomus begins scarfing down his cake making bear noises as he eats a Chocolate Sandwich Cookie cake. Everyone laughed and had a great evening. As for Broomus, he sneaks a slice of the red velvet cake to bed with him. He slowly falls into a sugar-filled sleep as he whispers to Scarlett, “I love you as much as I love my cake. Thank you for being my friend.”
