The sun shone brightly over the small village of Eldora, casting a warm glow on the fields where Aiden and Elara played. At 12 years old, Aiden was tall for his age, with a strong jawline and gentle eyes that reflected his protective nature. His little sister, Elara, was only 10 but was as fierce as she was kind. She had long, dark hair that always seemed to tangle in the wind and a laugh that could light up the dullest of days.
The siblings were inseparable, bound by more than just blood. They had a deep connection, a shared understanding that went beyond words. Growing up in a simple home, with their parents working hard to make ends meet, Aiden and Elara relied on each other for everything—companionship, support, and joy. Their bond was unbreakable, or so they thought.
Sitting beneath the towering oak tree in the field, they would often talk about the future. Aiden, ever the dreamer, would promise Elara that when they grew up, they would live side by side. They’d build homes next to each other, and their children would be as close as they were. Elara, with her eyes full of hope, would eagerly agree, her small hand resting in his as they looked out over the fields, imagining the life they would one day create.
“Promise me, Aiden,” she whispered one evening as the sun set, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange. “Promise me we’ll never be apart. Even when we have our own families, we’ll always be together.”
Aiden smiled down at her, ruffling her hair playfully. “I promise, Elara. Always. Nothing will ever come between us.”
The innocence of their promise was a reflection of their childhood—simple, pure, and untouched by the harsh realities of the world. But life, as it often does, had other plans. The whispers of war had begun to spread, a distant threat that seemed too far away to matter. Eldora was a peaceful village, isolated from the troubles of the outside world. But soon, even their quiet lives would be disrupted.
It started with the soldiers—faceless men in uniform who marched through the village, bringing news of an imminent invasion. The war that had once been nothing more than a rumor was now at their doorstep. The villagers were told to flee, to leave behind their homes and everything they had ever known.
Aiden and Elara’s parents hurried to pack what little they could carry, their faces pale with fear. The siblings stood hand in hand, their eyes wide as they watched their world crumble around them.
“We’ll stay together, right?” Elara asked, her voice trembling as she looked up at her brother.
“Of course,” Aiden replied, squeezing her hand tightly. “We’ll never be apart. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
But as the soldiers led the villagers to safety, chaos erupted. In the confusion, families were separated, pulled in different directions. Aiden, trying to protect Elara, was dragged away by a soldier, his shouts drowned out by the cries of the crowd. Elara, lost in the sea of people, reached out for her brother, but he was already too far away.
“Aiden!” she screamed, tears streaming down her face. “Aiden, don’t leave me!”
“I’ll find you!” Aiden shouted back, his voice barely audible over the noise. “I promise!”
And just like that, they were torn apart.
As the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, Elara and Aiden were forced to adjust to their new lives, each believing the other was still out there, somewhere, waiting. The promise they had made as children, once so certain, now seemed like a distant dream.
