Autistic Kids Live In Such A Different World
Autism is something that can be tough to deal with...
My grandson has autism and is 5 years old and watching him day by day has been very interesting. One of the things I have noticed the most about him is how he can go from happy to upset in such a short time. He has meltdowns very quickly and will be back smiling again in another minute.
If you deal with an Autism kid in your life you understand what a joy it can be and also the hardships you have as well. Getting my grandson medical attention and into programs has been tough. Without the ability to talk it has made it much tougher on him.
Having a kid with autism is tough and have respect for any parent who deals with it daily. One of my biggest fears with him is he is non-verbal and has no fear sometimes. Sending him to school worries me as they will be able to handle him. Autism kids many times are a handful and in a school setting it could be tough on him. Either way, he must and needs interaction with kids his own age.
Many times people do not realize a kid has Autism or why he acts a certain way. I've taken him to the store many times and people ask why won't he say hi to me. I tell them he is non-verbal and has Autism and they give me this weird look. Even in today's society many people still do not understand what Autism in kids is all about.
My grandson lives in his little world. His brothers are normal and do normal things. Sometimes it's tough for them to understand that their brother is different than they happen to be. Things such as ripping up paper and just doing weird things engulf his world. Sometimes it makes you wonder why he does it, but most of the time you have to embrace it.
The best part though is just watching him go through a day. Many things he cannot do he finds a way to do it. From using his feet as extra hands to moving things to get what he wants daily. His smile is so beautiful and he always makes me smile. Dealing with him can be tough sometimes and it means you must have a lot of patience.
Autism in a way makes him more special. Sometimes I wish he did not have it, but it makes him a special little angel. He always needs someone and he does things other kids do not which makes him special. My biggest problem with being non-verbal is understanding all his needs.
Without the ability to talk sometimes it's tough to figure out what he is asking for or wants done. It makes him very disappointed when I cannot understand what he wants or is asking for. Over time I have gotten better in understanding his wants and needs.
Inside I feel sad for him, but I have realized he is just a happy kid that I have been blessed with in my life. Sometimes in life, we are given special joys and my autistic child has been that and so much more.
Never take for granted your kids and what they can or cannot do. All kids are special in their own little ways. Most people take kids for granted, but they can teach us a lot if we take the time to watch, learn, and listen. Kids are a joy so enjoy each second you can with them. They grow up fast and before you know it they are in college and you wish they were young again.
