What is the first human connection to this world? What is the first thing we hear? A mother brings us into this world and her heartbeat is the first thing we both hear and feel. The vibrations and steady pump soothed us while we were developing and now here we are.
A mother nurtures us and helps when we need it. She is our best friend that makes us laugh, as well as, firm authority figure that we fear disappointing. She helps us with our homework and empathizes when we have our first broken heart. She is always there to talk to if there is a problem. She makes sure we know Monday night is Family Night and has pizza cooking along with a new DVD from Redbox to watch. She lets us sleep with her when we are scared because the movie that we chose was a horror movie you were excited to see, but now your brain sees demons where your dark sweatshirt lays, because we didn’t clean our room. Whoever reads this may not have had the same experiances, but this is my mother.
My mother got divorced from my father because she was no longer happy in the marriage. After being a stay at home mom for 11 years, she joined the police academy at the age of 37, not because she wanted to be a peace officer, but because she wanted her children to have stability. She ran six miles and did as many push ups and sit ups as she could everyday except Sundays, because that was the Sabbath day in our household, just so she could keep up with the younger recruits. She graduated second in her class and was sworn in the same day. Mothers willing put their lives on the line because they will do anything to protect their children. Mine did that for hers and everyone else in the county. My mother inspired me to join the military because seeing her in uniform and upholding the oath she swore made me proud. If it wasn’t for her, I’d propably be living at home, still figuring out my life. Now I’m an IT help desk technician who decided to write about her mother, to honor her.
My mother loves comedy. When one of us is having a bad day we do whatever we can to make us laugh it off. We joke around, tell funny stories, or we send memes back and forth to one another and comment about what it reminded us of. One time all of us got in trouble so she disconnected the modem so we couldn’t use the internet. Not even 30 minutes later, from the kitchen, we heard our mother say, “What happened to the internet?” Now whenever there is a zone where the internet goes out at one of our apartments/houses, we take a picture of the service outage with a caption that says, ‘Mother, what happened to the internet?’ She just laughs at us and calls us brats with a smile. Mothers teach us important lessons as we grow up. Mine taught me to always find a reason to smile and laugh. When you are smiling and laughing, the world doesn’t seem so bad for a few moments. In those moments, there are just memories of a more carefree time and the endorphins rushing around to help with the pain and stress of anything that has occurred or will occur.
No mother is perfect. I acknowledge that mine isn’t. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t inspire me with her strength, courage, caring, and humorous nature. There are so many women who deserve to be appreciated. Many women from many different backgrounds and my mother is one of them. If she reads this, I hope she knows that.
