A Special Caregiver

By Keith JonesPublished 5 years ago 4 min read

Sasha, who is a certified nurse assistant, works at Martha Coker nursing home. She clock's in one morning and notices Mrs. Jackson, one of her residents, being mean and trying to fight the head nurse.

"Mrs. Jackson! Stop it!" Sasha said as she walks into the room. Mrs. Jackson sees Sasha and begins to calm down mumbling a few words under her breath. "I don't know why she being mean today." the head nurse said to Sasha while putting her medicine in a bag. "I'll take it from here," Sasha said to the head nurse. "Ohh she's all yours!" the head nurse responds as she quickly leaves the room. "Now why you being mean this morning young lady," Sasha said to Mrs. Jackson in a playful voice being friendly. "I don't like her, she thinks she knows everything," Mrs. Jackson responded. "Come on! Let's get you to take a nice warm shower and get you all clean up," Sasha said as she helps Mrs. Jackson to the shower.

Afterward, Sasha helped Mrs. Jackson to her recliner chair, and begin combing through her hair slowly and gently. Mrs. Jackson sat there with her eyes closed enjoying the feeling of the comb scratching through her scalp. "You take good care of me," Mrs. Jackson spoke out loud still with her eyes closed, and continued, "Every since my husband died, you be the only one who takes good care of me. You always checking on me and I appreciate that," said Mrs. Jackson. "You don't have to thank me," Sasha said. "Even if I quit this nursing home, I'll always come here to check on you." Sasha continues combing her hair. "I know you will Sasha, that's why I like you!" Mrs. Jackson said as she begins to drift off to sleep.

While Mrs. Jackson was asleep, Sasha begins gathering her things getting ready to go to another resident. As she grabs her purse off the table, she accidentally knocks over Mrs. Jackson's picture that was sitting on the table face down. Sasha picks the picture back up and saw that big smile of Mrs. Jackson on it through the frame. She looks over and saw Mrs. Jackson still asleep so she quietly leaves out the room and close the door. Suddenly, Sasha's cell phone rings and she answers it. "Hello!" she resumes speaking over the phone. "No, I don't have the money! I will make a payment soon on the $10,000 loan as soon as I get paid. I'm at work right now so I will talk to you later!" she said as she hangs the phone up. Sasha signs, "I'm tired of them loan folks," she said as she heads to her next resident.

Later that day, Mrs. Jackson finally wakes up to see Sasha had left. She looks down on the floor beside her right foot and saw a little black book. "What is this?" she said as she picks the little black book up. She looked and saw Sasha's name on the front. "Oh, this is Sasha's small black notebook," she said. She opened up the small black notebook and begin reading it. She read where Sasha said Mrs. Jackson was her favorite resident. She also read about Sasha's financial problems. Overall, Mrs. Jackson was pleased with the kind words Sasha spoke of her.

A few days later, Sasha comes to work as normal and gets a report from another co-worker that Mrs. Jackson passed away around 3 am that morning. Tears filled Sasha's eyes as she was saddened over the death of Mrs. Jackson. She walks slowly to Mrs. Jackson's room and looks through the small door window. She saw a woman cleaning out the room then immediately begin reminiscing how Mrs. Jackson would be smiling at her when she walks into the room.

The lady who was cleaning the room opened the door to leave out and sees Sasha standing behind the door. "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't see you standing behind the door," the lady said to Sasha. "I'm sorry, I guess I still can't believe Mrs. Jackson is gone. "Sasha responded. "Yeah, I heard she passed earlier this morning. So sad!" the lady said. Sasha looked and saw her little black book in the lady's hand. "Hey! That's my little black book!" Sasha said surprised as she grabs the little black book out of the lady's hand. "Oh, I picked it up off the table beside the bed." the lady said then continued, "I think I saw Mrs. Jackson reading it when I walk in the other day. "I was looking for it. I must have left it the last day I worked. I didn't know that would be the last time I saw her," Sasha said as she held her little black book close to her heart.

Weeks passed and Sasha continued working at the nursing home. One day, while Sasha was working, she was told a guy wanted to see her. She takes a break to see what the guy wanted. "Hi! I'm an attorney the guy introduced himself. "I'm here on the behalf of Mrs. Jackson," said the attorney. "Mrs. Jackson!" Sasha said out loud surprised. "Yes!" the attorney explained. "Mrs. Jackson left you in her will," he continued, "Mrs. Jackson left you a total of $20,000."

Sasha couldn't believe it. "$20,000!!!" she shouted out loud. "Yes!" and also she wanted you to have this." The attorney passed her the frame with Mrs. Jackson's picture on it with her big smile. Sasha saw it was the same picture Mrs. Jackson kept in her room on the table. She stares at Mrs. Jackson in the picture. "Thank you!" Sasha said out loud as the tears rolled down her cheeks.
