Preparation for the elite Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) demands knowledge of GATE Physics Exam Pattern 2025. This test will test the knowledge of a candidate across several engineering and science disciplines, and Physics is surely one of them. IIT Roorkee would conduct the GATE 2025 examination on February 1, 2, 15, and 16, 2025. Read ahead to know every detail about the GATE Physics Exam Pattern.

Overview of GATE Physics Exam Pattern

Total number of questions, marking scheme, type of questions and structure of questions of GATE Physics Exam Pattern 2025 are to be presented here. This is to be a Computer-Based Test. It would last three hours.

Important Features of the GATE Physics Exam Pattern

  • No. of Questions: 65
  • No. of Marks: 100
  • Exam Time: 3 hours
  • Type of questions: MCQ, MSQ, and NAT
  • Negative marking is there for the wrong answer of MCQ-type questions

Division of GATE Physics

There are two divisions in the paper of GATE physics.

1. GA: Total 10 questions are worth 15 marks

  • 5 marks for questions carrying 1 mark each
  • 5 marks for questions carrying 2 marks each

2. Core Subject: Physics The remaining 85 marks are based on core topics in physics which comprise of 55 questions

  • 25 questions for 1 mark each
  • 30 questions for 2 marks each

It tests general aptitude along with specific knowledge in the subject of physics, therefore, candidates would have to spend time in both these sections.

Sharing of the General Aptitude Section

It assesses candidates on their verbal aptitude, numerical aptitude, and logical reasoning. Four areas are covered in depth: Verbal Aptitude: This tests the grammar, vocabulary, and English comprehension of a candidate. Analytical Aptitude: This tests the logical reasoning and problem-solving skills of a candidate. Spatial Aptitude: This tests how much a candidate can visualize and manipulate objects. Numerical Aptitude: This tests the basic math skills that include arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.

All GATE papers have this section, which is very critical because it contributes a significant amount to the overall marks.

Marking Scheme

For strategic preparation, one should understand the marking scheme carefully.

Correct answers in GA section carry either 1 or 2 marks, depending on the type of question.

In MCQs, an incorrect answer attracts a penalty, and that is usually one-third or one-half of the marks allotted to that particular question.

- No negative marking is done on NATs or MSQs.

This marking scheme enables the candidates to focus only on questions in which they are confident and not guess unless they are sure of it.

Important Topics in GATE Physics Syllabus

A good understanding of the important topics in the GATE Physics syllabus can be very helpful for preparation. The syllabus has nine major sections:

1. Mathematical Physics

2. Classical Mechanics

3. Electromagnetic Theory

4. Quantum Mechanics

5. Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics

6. Atomic and Molecular Physics

7. Solid State Physics

8. Electronics

9. Nuclear and Particle Physics

These subjects underlie most problems in the Physics exam.

Conclusion

Thus, this GATE Physics Exam Pattern 2025 will provide a structured frame for those preparing for the competitive exam. With such realization of question distribution and marking scheme and core topics within the syllabus, candidates can craft an appropriate study strategy that may bolster their chances of success in the exam. The pre-exam preparation should hence be around the exam pattern as dates for the examination approach.
