A Closer Look at UKVI IELTS Test Sections

In the last section, we looked at why you need IELTS UKVI. Now let us look at the different sections of the test.

1. Listening

The listening section of the test is divided into 4 parts. Each of the sections has 10 questions and are in the same order as the information in the recording. This means for instance that you will find the answer to questions 1 before answering question 2. The first and second part of the test deals with everyday social situations where in the first part there are conversations between 2 people and in the second part there is only one person is speaking.

The third and fourth part of the section deals with educational and training situations. In the third part, you will listen to conversations between 2 main speakers that can be an academic discussion between students, or a conversation guided by the tutor. The fourth part of the test only has one person who speaks on an academic subject. Keep in mind that you will only get to hear the recordings only once and the voices may have English accents from countries like Britain, Australia, North America and so on. For this section, you will get a time of 40 minutes, with 30 minutes of listening and 10 minutes at the end to write your answers. Write carefully as you can lose marks on incorrect spelling and grammar.  

2. Academic Reading

The Academic Reading Section of UKVI IELTS takes texts from a wide range of sources like books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and online resources. All the topics of the texts are of general interest to students on an undergraduate and postgraduate level. The texts may be written in a variety of styles. Among these at least one will have a logical argument. The texts may also contain things like graphs, illustrations, and diagrams. There may be texts with technical vocabulary in which case a definition is provided. The time duration offered for this section is 60 minutes and it is divided into 3 parts with a total of 40 questions. Which means you will have to write answers while reading. Unlike the listening section, there is no extra time allotted to write answers.

3. Academic Writing

The Academic Writing section is divided into 2 parts which means there are 2 tasks. The first task will need you to describe some visual information which can be a graph, table, chart, or diagram. You will need to write at least 150 words. This task will take no longer than 20 minutes.

The second task is where you will be given a point of view, an argument, or a problem for discussion. You will have to write at least 250 words. The time for this task is about 40 minutes. There are a few guidelines you must follow while writing the answers. Do not use bullet points in your answers or write them as notes.

4. Speaking

For the speaking section, you will have a one-on-one interview between the test taker and an examiner. It is divided into 3 parts and is recorded. These 3 parts test your speaking skills in various ways. The first part is about general topics like family, home, studies, and interests.

In the second part of the test, you will need to talk about a particular topic. You will be given a minute to prepare, you must speak for up to 2 minutes which will be followed by general questions on the topic. In the final part of the test, you will be asked to answer questions about the topic in more detail. This section of the test is 11 to 14 minutes long.
