The Light That Changed the World: A Story of the Quran
Long ago in the vast desert lands of Arabia, in a city called Makkah, a man named Muhammad lived a quiet and honest life. Known by his people as Al-Amin (the trustworthy), he was respected for his truthfulness and noble character. He belonged to the tribe of Quraysh, and even though he lived among people who worshipped idols and followed age-old traditions, he always felt in his heart that there must be something more — something greater.
One day, when Muhammad (peace be upon him) was 40 years old, he went to a cave called Hira, nestled in the mountains near Makkah. He often spent time there in solitude, meditating and seeking the truth. It was during one of these peaceful moments that the world changed forever.
Suddenly, a bright light filled the cave, and an angel appeared before him. It was the angel Jibreel (Gabriel), the same angel who had come to prophets before him. Muhammad was frightened, but the angel spoke firmly and gently: "Iqra!" — “Read!”
Muhammad replied, “I cannot read.” The angel embraced him tightly and repeated, “Read!” Again, the Prophet said he could not read. This happened three times. Then Jibreel recited the first verses of the Quran:
"Read in the name of your Lord who created — Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous — Who taught by the pen — Taught man that which he knew not." (Surah Al-‘Alaq, 96:1-5)
This was the beginning of the revelation of the Quran — the final message from Allah to humanity. Over the next 23 years, the Quran was revealed piece by piece. Sometimes only a few verses were revealed, and other times entire chapters came down. The revelations came in different situations — during battles, during peace, in joy, and in sorrow — guiding the Prophet and the Muslims through every stage of their journey.
The Quran was not revealed all at once, because it needed to address real-life events and provide guidance step by step. It was revealed in two main cities: Makkah and Madinah. The earlier verses revealed in Makkah focused on the oneness of God (Tawheed), the afterlife, and morality. After the Prophet migrated to Madinah, the revelations included laws, community matters, and detailed instructions for living a righteous life.
Every time a revelation came, the Prophet would memorize it and recite it to his companions. Many of them, like Zayd ibn Thabit, would write it down carefully on bones, leaves, or parchment. These verses were later compiled into a complete book after the Prophet’s passing, during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and later standardized by Caliph Uthman.

The Quran is unique — it is in Arabic, with unmatched eloquence and rhythm. It has 114 chapters (Surahs) and over 6,000 verses (Ayahs). It addresses all aspects of life — faith, worship, ethics, justice, family, and more. The Quran also speaks of science, history, and the natural world, encouraging people to think and reflect.
What makes the Quran truly miraculous is that it has remained unchanged for over 1,400 years. Not a word has been added or removed. It is memorized by millions around the world — from children to elders — exactly as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
Through the Quran, Allah spoke directly to humanity. It is a book of mercy, a guidance for those who seek truth, and a light that continues to shine in the hearts of believers. And all of it began with a single word: "Iqra" — Rea
