The Importance of Education: An Essay
By Miranda Monahan
Introduction
Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” In some countries, getting an education is a privilege that not everyone gets. In the world today, people need an education to pretty much do anything.
Education is important. Reasons, why education is important, are education is needed to get a job, education is needed to change the world and education is needed to help others.
Employment
Education is needed to get a job. Firstly, most employers these days, require any Employee or applicant to have a university and/or college degree or certificate. For example, people used to be able to get a high-paying job with just a high school diploma, today, that’s no longer the case. People will not be employed at most companies without a degree or certificate from a college or university. Secondly, having a good education looks good on a resume. For example, if people put on a resume that they went to a school like Harvard or Stanford or put on their resume that they have a Master’s degree or a Ph.D., the company is more likely to hire them because they know they’re well educated. Thirdly, if someone has a degree in a specific field and they go and apply for a job in that field, they’re most likely will get the job. For example, if someone has a degree in computer science, and they go and apply for a job as a web designer at a company like Tumblr or Instagram. They have a greater likelihood of being hired. Therefore, education is needed to get a job.
Human Rights and Changing the World
Education is needed to change the world. First of all, an education can help educate people on world issues that they can help fix. For example, people can find out about world issues through classes in school like Geography, In classes like geography, people can also find out about what caused or causes world issues. People may also find out about world issues and their causes from other sources like the internet or newspapers. Second of all, an education can help people solve world issues. For example, at age 12, Craig Kielburger saw an article in the Toronto Star about Iqbal Masih, who was killed for standing up for his human rights. After reading this article, Kielburger started fundraising money and getting his friends and family. This later turned into “Free The Children”. Third of all, an education can help end social stigmas. For example, in the news today, there are so many different stigmas about mental health. Maybe, if people were educated about mental health, there wouldn’t be stigmas about mental health. Therefore, education is needed to change the world.
Helping Others
Education is needed to help others. First of all, an education can help give others their education. For example, Oprah Winfrey built a school for girls in South Africa. The school is helping the girls who attend the school get their education. Oprah Winfrey is educated so, she is using her education to help others to get their education. Secondly, an education can open doors for others through knowledge. For example, someone may know a lot about a subject like autism. Someone else may not know a lot about autism so, they can share their knowledge about autism with that person. Now, that person will have a new understanding of autism and new doors just opened up for them because they understand autism. Thirdly, an education can help people learn valuable life lessons. For example, if someone doesn’t know the meaning of patience, someone can teach them that patience is a virtue and that good thing come to those who wait. Therefore, education is needed to help others.
Conclusion
In conclusion, education is important. Reasons, why education is important, are education is needed to get a job, education is needed to change the world and education is needed to help others. So, the next time someone says “education isn’t important”, think about this essay and remember that education is a tool that is a privilege to have and not a chore to obtain.
