The Golden Touch

The Consequences of Greed

By TOUSEEF HAIDERPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a king named Midas. He was a prosperous and powerful ruler who had everything one could dream of—lands, treasures, and a beautiful palace. However, despite his wealth, King Midas was never content. He constantly desired more. His greed knew no bounds, and he believed that gold was the ultimate source of happiness.

One day, as King Midas sat in his magnificent throne room, a mysterious figure appeared before him. The figure was an old man, wearing tattered clothes and a wise smile on his face. "I have heard of your great wealth, King Midas," the old man said, his voice calm and soothing. "But I have also heard of your insatiable desire for more. I can grant you one wish. Ask for anything, and it shall be yours."

King Midas, not hesitating for a moment, replied, "I wish that everything I touch turns to gold. I want to turn my entire kingdom into gold—everything from my palace to my gardens. No one will have wealth greater than mine."

The old man smiled gently but warned, "Be careful what you wish for, King Midas. Gold may seem like the ultimate treasure, but it can come with consequences."

With a wave of his hand, the old man granted King Midas's wish. The king's heart raced with excitement as he touched the golden apple in front of him. To his amazement, the apple turned into solid gold. His joy knew no limits. He rushed through his palace, touching every object he could find—furniture, statues, and even the walls—all transformed into gold.

The next morning, Midas woke up eager to continue his newfound wealth. As he reached for his breakfast, he touched the food, only to watch in horror as it turned to gold. He could no longer eat. In a panic, he called for his daughter, Marigold, to come to his side. But when she rushed to him and he touched her, she too turned into a lifeless golden statue.

King Midas was struck with sorrow. The gift he had so eagerly wished for had turned into a curse. He realized the depth of his mistake too late. His greed had blinded him to the simple joys of life—food, love, and human connection. No matter how much gold he accumulated, he could never find happiness in it.

Desperate to reverse the curse, Midas searched for the old man who had granted him the wish. He journeyed through forests, climbed mountains, and crossed rivers, until he finally found the wise figure sitting beneath a large oak tree.

"I have made a terrible mistake," Midas confessed, his voice full of regret. "I asked for gold, but now I see that wealth is nothing without love, food, and joy. Please, I beg you, take this curse away from me."

The old man listened patiently and nodded. "You have learned a valuable lesson, King Midas. Greed leads to nothing but sorrow, and true wealth lies in the things that money cannot buy—love, friendship, and happiness."

With a wave of his hand, the old man reversed the spell. King Midas's daughter was restored to life, and all the gold in his kingdom returned to its original state.

Midas returned to his palace, now a changed man. He gave away his riches to the poor and focused on the well-being of his people. He spent more time with his daughter, cherishing the moments he had once taken for granted. The lesson he learned from the golden touch stayed with him forever: true wealth lies not in gold, but in the love and connections we share with others.

Moral of the Story: Greed can blind us to the true joys of life, and the things that matter most cannot be bought with wealth.
