Re-tell Lecture is a crucial PTE Academic task that involves an audio recording, is high-scoring, and has high weightage. Due to this, many PTE aspirants find the tasks to be unnerving. In this blog, we will talk about the task, its various aspects and contours, and also share valuable tips and strategies.

In case you are looking for ways to improve your Retell Lecture score, these tips will stand you in good stead, and help you score more.

First, let us talk about the PTE Re-tell Lecture task a little.

Re-tell Lecture is primarily considered to be a Speaking Module task, while the scoring is integral and contributes points towards both the Listening and the Speaking modules. The aspirants have to listen to audio, and then retell what he/she heard in their own words.

Following the playing of the audio, aspirants have 10 seconds of preparation time, before the microphone opens, and they have to retell the lecture in their language and words.

So now let’s look at some of the expert suggestions to crack the retail lecture task in the PTE academic exam.

1. Take high-quality notes in legible handwriting

In the PTE Exam, you will be provided erasable notepads. Be sure to make full use of the notepad. Don’t rely on your memory to remember the entire lecture. When taking notes, be sure to take them in handwriting that can be understood easily. Develop your shortcuts to speed up the note-taking process. You can also rely on shortcuts or abbreviations to help you remember quickly and easily.

It is not essential to note down full sentences, but only the keywords. These are important words from the lecture that will serve as memory aids; these can be adjectives, proper nouns, adverbs, etc. or other details.

Go for bunches of words that will help you to recall the entire sentence.

2. Don’t take unnecessary pauses

It is essential to keep in mind that if you are quiet for more than 3 seconds, then the microphone will stop automatically. So, mainly, the remainder of your speech about the same task won’t get recorded after that point.

3. Use connectors

While speaking in the course of our daily life, we often pepper our speech with ‘aahs’ and ‘uhms’, when thinking about what to say next. This is not acceptable in the PTE Academic exam, and you stand to lose points for Oral Fluency.

Instead of stalling with such sounds, use connectors like ‘furthermore’, ‘in addition’, ‘besides’, ‘moreover’ etc. These words will serve as fillers even as you gather your thoughts in your mind.

4. Use Templates for effectively retelling the lecture

With templates, you have the basic structure in place with you for retelling the lecture. Templates can let you speak effortlessly, without pauses or breaks, for the required 40 seconds.

5. Aim to cover essential points for the content score

For a good content score, don’t forget to cover key points that illustrate the relationships between different elements. Don’t forget to include a conclusion at the end.
