Hair care is often a very forgotten aspect of beauty and health care. Most people believe simply washing their hair every other day is enough to keep their hair healthy and happy. But that is just the bare minimum to take care of your hair. Here is a list of some easy tips to help you jazz up your hair care game!

Tip Number One: Conditioner first

Most people tend to think it’s best to shampoo first and condition second, but actually, reversing this process will help improve the body of your hair and its natural shine. It’s important to shampoo your hair, but it can also strip your hair of its natural oils and which are very important for your hair health. Conditioning your hair first offers a layer of protection against this, keeping your hair stronger. It’s also important to make sure to spread the conditioner evenly throughout your hair. Do this by having a comb or a brush that you keep in your shower, and brush the conditioner through your hair.

Tip Number Two: Don’t Overwash Your Hair

Most people don’t like when their hair looks oily, because of this, they tend to overwash their hair. However, these oils are natural and very important for hair health. The optimal amount of time to wash your hair is every other day or every couple of days, so the oils have a chance to sit in your hair and help add the natural shine and health your hair needs. (Unless you are regularly doing activities that dirty your hair.) Overwashing your hair actually makes it look more dull and flat; it kills the body in your hair and forces you to use more products to get that natural glow and bounce.

Tip Number Three: Wear Your Hair Up While You Sleep

This might not seem like a big deal, but your hair can get damaged very quickly through 6-8 hours of being pressed up against a pillow at night. Not to mention it gets hot, your head provides a certain amount of heat, so it can be like sleeping on a heater - stripping the moisture out of your hair. Put your hair up in a loose topknot, as high as you can, with a silk scrunchie. Or even better, use a silk wrap or bonnet to protect your hair from rubbing and excess heat.

Tip Number Four: Have Protection Every Time You Heat Your Hair

Hairdryers, flat irons, curlers, and blowouts - all of these provide a large amount of heat to your hair that will damage your hair if you don’t have proper heat protection. Hair is not meant to take so much heat; it needs to be cool and moisturized. Your haircuts and styles will last longer, and your hair will be nicer and healthier. It’s worth it for the health of your hair to invest in a heat protection spray and use it every single time before heating your hair!

Tip Number Five: Be Careful How Long You Leave Your Extensions In

If you sleep in your extensions, it will rip your hair out, causing more split ends and fractured hair. Extensions cause a tight pull on your hair that can stress the hair out and cause damage. Despite what some hairdressers might say, 3-4 months is too long to keep things like extensions in your hair. Take them out.

No matter what your hair looks like or your current views on hair care, adding these small tips to your routine can help you dramatically improve your hair quality. Make sure to add hair care to your regular beauty and health care routine. Research your hair type and learn what’s best for you!
