Psalms 91:Finding Shelter in the Shadow of the Almighty

Discovering Divine Protection and Comfort in Times of Trouble

By alex kimuyuPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Psalm 91, a beautiful psalm of assurance and comfort, has been a source of solace for countless believers throughout the ages. Some ancient scholars once speculated that Moses might have authored not only the preceding psalm but also the eight that follow it. However, this notion was disproved, as Psalm 95 is explicitly attributed to David, who lived long after Moses (Hebrews 4:7). It is more likely that David, the shepherd-king, penned this psalm as a decree of divine protection for all true believers. Instead of issuing it in his name or under his authority, David presented it in the name of the King of kings, under the broad seal of Heaven.

The psalm contains several essential themes:

I. The psalmist's personal resolution to seek refuge in God and to encourage others to do the same (v. 2, 9).

II. The promises God makes to those who genuinely seek Him with all their hearts:

  1. Divine protection and care, akin to finding shelter in the Most High (v. 1, 4).
  2. Deliverance from the forces of darkness, such as the snare of the fowler or the noisome pestilence (v. 3, 5, 6). These promises ensure a unique and distinguishing preservation (v. 7, 8).
  3. The watchful care of holy angels (v. 10-12).
  4. Triumph over adversaries (v. 13).
  5. Being highly favored by God (v. 14-16).

As we sing this psalm, its words envelop us in a sense of divine protection. Many scholars believe that these promises primarily belong to Christ, the Mediator (Isaiah 49:2). Not because Satan attempted to tempt Christ using one of these promises (Matthew 4:6), but because they perfectly align with Christ and are sweet and certain for all believers when received through Him.

The opening verses (1-8) unveil a profound truth: those who live a life of communion with God remain under His constant and loving protection, allowing them to maintain serenity and security of mind at all times. The character of a true believer is one who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, choosing to make God their guardian. Such believers abide safely under the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered from life's storms.

Verse 2 resonates with a sense of personal commitment as the psalmist proclaims, "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge, my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." This declaration reflects wholehearted confidence in God's unfailing protection. Those who truly know God will confidently choose Him as their refuge, placing their unwavering trust in His mighty hands. In God, there is no disappointment, for He is faithful and sure.

Verses 3-4 provide the assurance of divine deliverance from perilous circumstances. Believers are safeguarded from unseen traps set by the enemy and protected from noxious dangers. This promise extends to both physical and spiritual perils, ensuring that God's children are secured from all harm.

Verses 5-6 resonate with the psalmist's confident proclamation that believers need not fear evil, whether it be the darkness of night or the threats of day. God's ever-present and protective care offers comfort, shielding them from both spiritual snares and physical afflictions.

In verses 7-8, the psalmist reaffirms the distinguishing preservation of believers. Even amidst the downfall of multitudes, believers remain untouched, a testament to God's watchful eye and unwavering protection. The evidence of their safety is apparent as they witness God's righteous judgment upon the wicked.

The subsequent verses (9-16) continue to convey God's words of comfort and assurance to His people. These promises are for those who know and love God, and who diligently call upon Him in prayer. They include divine deliverance, the unwavering presence of God in times of trouble, answers to prayers, elevation in life, and the satisfaction of a purposeful existence. Ultimately, they culminate in the promise of eternal salvation.

Let us take comfort in these promises, knowing that those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High are continually under His loving protection. As we seek refuge in God and set our love upon Him, we can rest assured that He will be our fortress and deliverer in all circumstances. These divine assurances invite us to place our complete trust in Him and to find peace in the shadow of His wings. Let us hold fast to the promises of Psalm 91, allowing them to anchor our souls in times of uncertainty and reminding us that we are safely held in the arms of our Heavenly Father. May this psalm be a constant source of strength, hope, and comfort as we journey through life's trials, always trusting in the unfailing protection and grace of our God.IT tells us what to do when trouble comes
