Read edited excerpts:

Agastya, can you tell us about your educational journey after Apeejay?

After completing my 12th from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in 2018, I joined Manipal Institute of Technology for a B.Tech program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I graduated in 2022 and secured a campus placement at Ogam Solutions, which was later acquired by Merkle. I have been working there as a Data Analyst since then.

How did Apeejay School contribute to your career choice and success?

I spent my entire school life at Apeejay, from nursery to 12th grade. The school’s emphasis on both academics and extracurricular activities played a significant role in shaping my interests. My passion for maths and physics, encouraged by excellent teachers, steered me towards engineering. Additionally, participating in sports like badminton and karate taught me teamwork and leadership, essential skills in my professional life.

Could you share some memorable experiences from your time at Apeejay?

One of my fondest memories is the prize distribution ceremonies, where the Principal would award medals during assemblies. This recognition was incredibly motivating. Another memorable aspect was the transition to a new class each year, which always felt like a fresh start.

How did Apeejay's extracurricular activities influence your career?

Apeejay’s support for extracurricular activities was immense. Playing sports and participating in various events taught me early on the importance of teamwork and dedication. These experiences were crucial in my career, especially in roles that require collaboration and project management.

Can you describe your current role and responsibilities at Merkle?

As a Data Analyst at Merkle, I work on various projects, including campaign management, data management, and data migration. My day typically starts with a stand-up meeting at 10:30 AM, and my work involves handling data from different domains, which is challenging but rewarding. The technologies I frequently use include SQL, Python, Microsoft Excel, and Power BI.

What challenges do you face in your job, and how do you overcome them?

One of the main challenges is dealing with different types of data from various domains each week. It requires patience and a quick understanding of how the data works. The rewarding part is when the data migration passes QA without issues, indicating a job well done.

What technologies and skills do you frequently use in your job?

I frequently use SQL, Python, Microsoft Excel, and Power BI. While Python is not mandatory, having proficiency in any programming language is beneficial. Continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends are also crucial.

How do you keep your skills and knowledge up-to-date in this rapidly changing field?

I focus on both formal learning and social media. Following technology-focused YouTubers and industry experts helps me stay informed about the latest trends and advancements. Practical knowledge gained from on-the-job challenges is equally important.

What advice would you give to current students about preparing for a career in tech?

I would advise students to have a clear understanding of basic subjects like math and physics, and to pick up a programming language early on. Internships are essential as they provide practical knowledge and a better understanding of the industry. It’s also important to stay curious and continually learn about new technologies and trends.

How can someone without a tech degree enter the data analytics field?

While a tech degree is beneficial, it’s not the only path. Roles like business analysts often hire from non-tech backgrounds. Building a strong portfolio and gaining certifications in data analytics can also open doors. Practical experience and showcasing your skills can make you a strong candidate even without a traditional tech degree.

What are your thoughts on the future of data-related jobs?

Data-related jobs are in high demand and will continue to grow. With the increasing reliance on data for decision-making in various industries, there are ample opportunities for those skilled in data analytics. It's a field that requires continuous learning and adaptability.

What role do teachers play in a student's success according to you?

Teachers play a pivotal role in a student’s success. It’s important to find teachers who resonate with you and can explain concepts in a way that you understand. Nowadays, with the internet, students can supplement their learning with online resources, but the foundation laid by good teachers is irreplaceable.
